Professionally, Bill is an American bassist and owns a record label and music production. Laswell began his professional bass playing career in R&B and funk bands in Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan. He’s listened to shows by Iggy and the Stooges, MC5 and Funkadelic that, among others, mix genres.
Miles Davis, Albert Ayler, and John Coltrane all influenced him. Laswell moved to New York City in the late 1970s and became active in the expanding local music scene. He moved into producer Giorgio Gomelsky’s loft and joined a band that would later become Original Materials.
He has collaborated with artists such as Brian Eno, Fred Frith, John Zorn, Daniel Ponce, Ginger Baker, Peter Brötzmann, Kip Hanrahan and Sonny Sharrock.
Bill and Martin Bisi founded a music studio and met Jean Karakos of Celluloid Records. Laswell’s debut solo album was Baselines. Later, on Herbie Hancock’s album Future Shock, he co-wrote and produced “Rockit”.
