Billions (TV Series)

“Billions” is a compelling American drama television series co-created by Brian Koppelman, David Levien, and Andrew Ross Sorkin. It made its debut on January 17, 2016, airing on Showtime, and recently concluded with its seventh season, which premiered on August 13, 2023.

The series predominantly unfolds in the bustling financial hubs of New York and Connecticut, delving into the world of high finance. At its core is the character Bobby Axelrod, portrayed by Damian Lewis, a shrewd hedge fund manager who is unrelenting in his pursuit of wealth and influence.

Axelrod’s ruthless tactics frequently put him on the radar of United States Attorney Chuck Rhoades, played by Paul Giamatti. Chuck Rhoades draws inspiration from Preet Bharara, who served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan from 2009 to 2017.

The show draws inspiration from real-life federal prosecutions related to financial crimes, including Bharara’s 2013 prosecution of hedge fund manager Steven A. Cohen of S.A.C. Capital Advisors and Salomon Brothers’ 1991 manipulation of U.S. Treasury bonds.

The narrative weaves in various subplots, featuring characters like Wendy Rhoades, a psychiatrist-turned-performance coach portrayed by Maggie Siff, market analyst Taylor Mason, played by Asia Kate Dillon, and Axelrod’s trusted right-hand man, Mike “Wags” Wagner, portrayed by David Costabile.

Notably, “Billions” holds the distinction of being the first American TV series to introduce a non-binary character in Taylor Mason. This groundbreaking inclusion has led to multiple nominations for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series, as the show is recognized for its positive representation of the LGBTQ community.

In this pivotal scene, Prince has a long-awaited meeting with Chuck, during which Chuck makes his intentions clear. Chuck’s primary demand is for Prince to abandon his presidential campaign and return to his profit-driven ways. Instead, he chooses to heed Chuck’s other warning, which is to cooperate regarding Liu Jr., who is facing an impending indictment.

To appease Liu Sr., the Prince makes extravagant promises, assuring him of smooth trade relations with Taipei two years into his hypothetical presidency. He also assures that Liu Jr. will avoid imprisonment. As their plane lands, Prince deliberately orchestrates a public display, walking Liu to Chuck while pretending to be unaware that the plane was chartered without his knowledge.

He publicly thanks Chuck for bringing this matter to his attention, thereby controlling the narrative and attempting to deflect any negative press. Chuck, in a conversation with Ira, emphasizes the difficulty of pursuing a presidential campaign while constantly looking over one’s shoulder, implying that Prince will now have to operate in a similar manner.

Prince takes further steps to bolster his public image by funding relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Rosie through the Indiana National Guard. However, his advisor Luke highlights the need for Prince to anticipate and respond even more swiftly to disasters like hurricanes to maintain his image as a responsible leader.

In a subplot involving Scooter, he is reluctantly asked to give up his dreams once again, reinforcing the notion that “Americans are stupid.” Scooter, a loyalist, continues to sacrifice for Prince, finding solace in his cherished Bernstein conducting baton, which he entrusts to Prince for safekeeping until his presidential campaign is on hold. This turn of events leaves one hoping that Scooter will stop making such personal sacrifices for his master’s ambitions.

Lastly, Wendy has a conversation with Wags, during which she astutely deduces that Wags deliberately caused the hurricane chaos to tarnish Prince’s image. While Wendy acknowledges that this caution makes Prince more careful, she implores Wags to temper his impulsivity in this critical phase of their battle, emphasizing the need for analytical and strategic thinking. Wendy expresses her unwavering commitment to their cause.

Billions Season 7 Episode 4 Recap

Karl’s persistent attendance at various self-help meetings eventually bears fruit when he and Chuck stumble upon a promising lead. They discover Kai Huang Liu, an NFT scammer whose father shares a lucrative business relationship, and private jets, with Mike Prince.

This intriguing connection raises questions about the nature of their association, whether it’s a unique form of mutual affection or merely a business partnership. Chuck, keeping his promise regarding the Super PAC, decides to seize this opportunity by planning to indict Liu Jr. for crypto-fraud and Prince for aiding a fugitive.

The day kicks off for Mike Prince with an unexpected remark from Bradford Luke, who opines that most Americans are not inclined to relate to a connoisseur of classical music like Prince. He suggests that Prince should reconsider allowing Scooter to conduct the Philharmonic Orchestra, as it may alienate potential voters.

However, Prince, supported by Wendy, firmly rejects this idea. Wendy reminds Luke that Prince embodies change, challenging conventional perceptions of what qualities a “leader of the free world” should possess. This exchange leads to an entertaining and somewhat flirtatious banter between Wendy and Luke, who discuss the merits and drawbacks of trying to rein in Prince’s unique qualities.

Meanwhile, on the trading floor, the traders are engrossed in tracking an approaching hurricane, even placing bets on its name and category. Victor wins the bet, and the hurricane is dubbed Hurricane Rosie. However, Taylor and Philip dampen their celebrations by cautioning that if it escalates to a Category 5 hurricane, Prince’s Statutory Claims could skyrocket. Fortunately, the hurricane stabilized at Category 4.

Taylor and Philip soon realize, with Wags not concealing his involvement, that Wags had bribed a scientist responsible for hurricane categorization, promising a substantial research grant. However, Wags’ triumph is short-lived as Prince calls him to his office.

Prince becomes aware that an arrest warrant for Liu Jr. Prince’s plane being chartered by Liu Jr. was unexpected, and he chooses to keep the plane airborne while sending Kate Sacker to negotiate with Chuck on his behalf. The hurricane incident leads to negative optics for Prince, as he appears to have profited while numerous homes were destroyed. Wendy persuades Wags to take responsibility for his actions, saving him from being fired, as Prince acknowledges that Wags couldn’t help himself.

Personal subplots unfold concurrently. Wendy’s therapy sessions with Dr. Meyer come to an abrupt end when Wendy reveals her true intentions of undermining Mike Prince from within, causing collateral damage to Meyer’s clients. Wendy decides to end their sessions, but Meyer refers her clients to Michael Prince Capital to assist Wendy in her “war.” This development raises questions about the simplicity of the arrangement.

On the other hand, Scooter’s opportunity to conduct for the orchestra again carries immense significance. Philip, Scooter’s nephew, openly expresses his pride and invites the entire family to celebrate this momentous occasion and witness Scooter fulfill his ambition.
