Bone Tomahawk is a horror film set in the American West, released in 2015. The film marks the directorial debut of S. Craig Zahler and features a talented cast that includes Kurt Russell , Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins, Lili Simmons, Evan Jonigkeit, David Arquette and Sid Haig. The film is about a small town sheriff who leads a group of men into a desolate area to rescue three individuals abducted by a tribe of cannibals.
The idea for the film arose when Zahler’s friend and manager, Dallas Sonnier, suggested adapting Zahler’s Western novel, Wraiths of a Broken Land, into a film. However, due to budget constraints, Zahler decided to write a Western rescue movie.
Casting began in October 2014, with Peter Sarsgaard, Timothy Olyphant and Jennifer Carpenter initially signed but later replaced by Wilson, Fox and Simmons due to scheduling conflicts. Principal photography took place in California over a 21-day period in October 2014.
Bone Tomahawk premiered at Fantastic Fest on October 1, 2015. In their rescue attempt, the group managed to kill three of the captors. However, Brooder lost his life, while Hunt and Chicory were captured and imprisoned by the Troglodytes. Inside their prison, Hunt and Chicory discover Samantha and Nick in a separate cell, but unfortunately, they also learn that the Troglodytes killed and ate Purvis.
Tragically, Nick suffered a terrible fate when he was stripped naked, brutally scalped, split in half while still alive and finally eaten by the Troglodytes. In a desperate move, Hunt tricked some Troglodytes into drinking alcohol mixed with opium. One person died of poisoning, and as a result another lost consciousness.
Arthur, who has been following the group’s trail, eventually stumbles upon the valley where Troglodytes reside. He kills two of them and discovers their use of animal rickets to communicate. Blowing the whistle, Arthur lured another Troglodyte to his side and quickly eliminated him.
Inside the deep cave, the Troglodyte leader became enraged by the effects of the poisoning. In an act of brutality, Troglodytes disemboweled Hunt, inserted a pot of heated opium into the wound, and shot him. At that moment, Arthur arrives, removes the leader and frees Samantha and Chicory from their captivity.
Despite being mortally wounded, Hunt decided to stay with the rifle. His intention was to kill any surviving Troglodytes when they returned, ensuring that they would not be able to terrorize the town of Bright Hope any further. As the three remaining members of the party leave the cave, they encounter two pregnant Troglodyte women. These women were horribly mutilated, with limbs amputated and stakes driven into their eyes, leaving them blind.
When the party had left the valley, Arthur blew the Troglodyte whistle, but there was no response. Moments later, they heard three gunshots in the distance.

Tomahawk Bone Conspiracy
In the 1890s, Purvis and Buddy, two robbers, stumbled upon a Native American burial ground. They are suddenly attacked, resulting in Buddy’s death, while Purvis escapes. Seeking refuge, Purvis arrives in the nearby town of Bright Hope, where he discreetly bury his stolen booty. Deputy Chicory witnesses the action and reports it to Sheriff Franklin Hunt, who confronts Purvis.
As Purvis tried to flee, Sheriff Hunt shot him in the leg. Wanting to provide medical assistance to Purvis, Hunt sends his skilled gunman John Brooder to find the town’s doctor. Instead of finding a doctor, however, Brooder meets Samantha O’Dwyer, the physician’s assistant and wife of the wounded Arthur O’Dwyer. Hunt leaves Samantha with his other deputy, Nick, to take care of Purvis in the sheriff’s office. That night, a boy settled in town is murdered.
Upon discovering the gruesome murder, Sheriff Hunt returns to his office, only to find it empty, saving an arrow left behind. The professor, a savvy Native American, identified the arrow as belonging to a tribe known as the “Troglodytes” and helped locate their valley on the map.
The professor warned Hunt that the Troglodytes were a group of innate cannibals, shunned by other native tribes. Convinced that Samantha, Nick, and Purvis have been captured by the Troglodytes, Hunt assembles a rescue team consisting of Chicory, Brooder and Arthur, despite his own wounds.
After several days of moving, the rescue team’s camp came across two strangers. Fearing they were scouts for a raid, Brooder killed them. The party establishes a new camp but is quickly attacked by raiders who injure Brooder’s horse and steal the rest.
In the ensuing chaos, Brooder and Arthur get into a fight, which aggravates Arthur’s leg injury. Chicory decides to stay behind to take care of Arthur’s health while Hunt and Brooder continue walking. Finally reaching the valley of the Troglodytes, the rescue team finds themselves ambushed by a tribe of barbarians.
