Budd Friedman Passed Away At The Age Of 90

Budd Friedman, an American comedian and author of the Improved Comedy Club, passed away on Saturday, November 12 at the age of 90. He died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of heart failure. The official Hollywood Improv Twitter account announced his death. The tweet said,

“Today, the world of comics has lost a giant. In 1963, he revolutionized the comedy world by founding the first comedy club where the public could laugh together. He changed the world in 1963. He went international. He is a pioneer. He is a true gentleman. He is a celebrity.”

In 1963, shortly after leaving his job as an advertising executive, the actor and producer founded Improv in New York City.

Budd Friedman, born June 6, 1932 in Norwich, Connecticut, served in the United States Army’s infantry during the Korean War in the early 1950s. Friedman was hospitalized after being wounded by a grenade. of the enemy on his first day of combat in the summer of 1953. He received his Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge (CIB). The comedy club pioneer, along with his future wife, Silver Saunders, founded The Improv in the Hell’s Kitchen district of Manhattan in 1963. The club’s sole location is on 44th Street, on the southeast corner of 9th Avenue.

Originally, the Improv Comedy Club was an after-hours cafe where Broadway actors would perform. Over time, comedians began using the club to experiment with new material, and talent scouts from other New York shows began signing up modern performers from the venue. . Rodney Dangerfield, Richard Lewis, Robert Klein, Jay Leno, Andy Kaufman, Freddie Prinze, Steve Landesberg and Jimmie Walker are just a few of the famous comedians that Budd Friedman helped launch.
