Cake
Cake is a rock band from Sacramento, California. They have five members: John McCrea, who sings; Vince DiFiore, trumpet player; Xan McCurdy, guitarist; Daniel McCallum, bassist; and Todd Roper, who plays drums. The band is known for its satirical lyrics and the singer’s unique voice. They blend different musical styles such as country, disco, rock, funk and hip-hop into their songs.
Cake started in 1991 with members John McCrea, Vince DiFiore, Greg Brown, Frank French and Shon Meckfessel. Then Gabe Nelson replaced Meckfessel. They released their first album “Motorcade of Generosity” on their own before signing with Capricorn Records in 1995.
Their song “Rock ‘n’ Roll Lifestyle” became popular, peaking at number 35 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and appearing on MTV’s 120 Minutes. After several changes in the band’s lineup, they released their second album, “Fashion Nugget” in 1996, which achieved major success with the hit single “The Distance”. As they continued to make music, they released more albums such as “Lasting the Magic” in 1998 and “Comfortable Eagle” in 2001, which featured the hit song “Short Skirt/Shirt long coat”.
In 2004, they released “Pressure Chief”, their final album with Columbia Records. They then founded their own label called Upbeat Records and released “Showroom of Compassion” in 2011. The album did very well, topping the Billboard charts. Since 2011, they have not released many new albums but still perform live and occasionally hint that they may release new music in the future.

Cake music style
Cake’s music blends a lot of different styles together. They blend country music, mariachi, new wave, college rock, jazz, funk, Iranian folk music, Brazilian music and hip hop into their songs. John McCrea, the lead singer, drew inspiration from artists such as Hank Williams, Tom Zé, Golden Gate Quartet and Sly and the Family Stone.
The band’s style is recognized in a number of ways. First, Vince DiFiore’s trumpet playing plays a big part in their sound. McCrea wanted another instrument to accompany his songs, and the trumpet was perfect, adding a different tone. McCrea himself is known for his clever and sarcastic lyrics, delivered in a blunt, deadpan manner. He sings in a monotone voice, which gives their music a different feel. Additionally, they use an instrument called a vibraslap, which adds a unique sound to their music.
Overall, Cake is famous for mixing different types of music together and creating a sound that is both distinctive and eclectic.
