Career
- Colin de Grandhomme advances to the international circuit after an impressive domestic streak. Last year, he hit 300 points for Auckland in the Plunket Shield, with his medium speed option adding extra power. He also played a key role in Auckland’s HRV T20 Cup victory in 2010-11.
- In 2012, he was called up to the Blackcaps for the home series against Zimbabwe and South Africa. Grandhomme, who was born in Zimbabwe, represented his country at the U19 World Cup in 2004 before moving to New Zealand in search of better opportunities.
- In 2012-13, shorter formats received nationwide appeal. His good dribbling and average speed make him a great choice for limited cricket.
- However, it was in his Test debut that de Grandhomme made the biggest impression. In the summer of 2016 he caused a ruckus at home against Pakistan on seams where his average speed was sufficient as long as there was accuracy.
- His six debuts are the best by a debuting artist in New Zealand. Though he hasn’t been a regular in the Tests section since then, de Grandhomme is regularly weighed in at stadiums.
- The reason for this is his ability to move the ball at moderate speed – a skill that improves dramatically on green runs. Besides, his ability to hit the ball counter-attack is a plus.
- Although de Grandhomme’s career is still in its early stages, his ability to turn the tide makes him a worthwhile player, especially in whiteball cricket.
- If New Zealand decides to change the batting order in their Test, he could also become the longest form regular. Although we have glimpsed de Grandhomme’s talent, it is safe to say that he has yet to reach his full potential on the international stage.
- New Zealand’s obsession with all-rounders is well known, and the Kiwis will be hoping that de Grandhomme can cement its place across the formats in the years to come.
- The 2016-17 season was a turning point for de Grandhomme. Not only did he make his Test debut, but he was also called by the Kolkata Horseman to replace Andre Russell.
- Despite playing for most of the season, de Grandhomme had few chances to get the ball. His standout performance was 3 to 4 against Bangalore on an athlete-friendly match at Eden Gardens.
- The 2018 season marks the 10th anniversary of the IPL and all teams are looking to the future, and de Grandhomme is not in KKR’s plans. Bangalore bought him for 2.2 crore INR, up from the base price of 75 lakh.
- The change doesn’t affect his luck as he didn’t start the season and when he does, his chances are slim. However, with a T20 strike rate of 166, RCB doesn’t want to lose to the all-round burly.
