The film was a collaborative effort with key staff from the original series, including director Shinichirō Watanabe and composer Yoko Kanno. To maintain continuity, the film retained the style of the series but introduced innovations such as live-action cinematography and enhanced animation.

It incorporated Arabic aesthetics, with Watanabe even traveling to Morocco for research. Released in 2001 in Japan and 2002 in the United States, the film grossed over $3 million globally, received rave reviews, and received a nomination for Best Animated Feature from Online Film Critics Association.
