When he was 11, his family moved to Dayton, Ohio, where his father became the pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church. In 1953, his father was appointed dean of Cedarville College (now Cedarville University), and the family moved to Cedarville, Ohio.
Jeremiah graduated from Cedarville College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1963, the same year he married his college love, Donna Thompson. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1967 and went on to graduate school at Grace Seminary in 1972. In 1981, Cedarville awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree.

Jeremiah-born Ruby and James T. Jeremiah founded Blackhawk Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1969, and Blackhawk Christian School in 1973. He also created and launched Bible Hour that year, reaching specializes in the use of televised mass media to proclaim the Gospel. During his 12-year tenure as chief pastor at Blackhawk, the church grew from seven families to 1,300 people.
In 1981, the Jeremiah family, which included four children, moved to Southern California, where David Jeremiah assumed the position of senior pastor of Scott Memorial Baptist Church (now Shadow Mountain Community Church) from Tim LaHaye. Jeremiah was diagnosed with lymphoma in 1994 and again in 1998. In 1999, a nodule on his neck was surgically removed and he received a stem cell transplant. His book, When Your World Collapses, chronicles his experiences during that time period.
