David Trimble A Novel Peace Prize Winner Passed Away At The Age Of 77

David Trimble, the former first minister of Northern Ireland and laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize, died away on July 25 at the age of 77. According to a brief statement provided by his family to Express UK, the former minister “died following a brief illness.” No other information on his demise has yet been released. Doug Beattie, the current leader of David Trimble’s Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), expressed his sadness on Twitter after Trimble’s passing. The politician wrote the following:

“#LordTrimble was a political titan, a gutsy politician, a steadfast unionist, and a friend.”

David Trimble’s life and works

The former first minister helped implement the historic peace agreement that ended decades of bloodshed in Ireland in 1998. In the same year, he shared the Noble Peace Prize with John Hume, his Republican colleague. His peace negotiations ended the 30-year violence in Northern Ireland that had claimed the lives of at least 3,500 individuals.

The peace deal that was struck as a result of David Trimble is also known as the Good Friday Agreement. As a result of this agreement, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland collaborate on vital issues such as health and agriculture. As the peace offers progressed, Trimble became the first UUP leader to visit the Irish prime minister in Dublin in thirty years. In 1997, the politician was selected as the first unionist leader since the division of Ireland to negotiate with Sinn Féin.

After the 1998 peace agreement, Trimble served as the First Minister of Northern Ireland, while Seamus Mallon, the SDLP’s deputy leader, served as the Deputy First Minister. In the early 1970s, Trimble was first affiliated with the Unionist breakaway group Vanguard. In 1978, he subsequently joined the Ulster Unionist Party.

Prior to entering politics full-time, Lord Trimble was an established member of the law faculty at Queen’s University, Belfast. In 1983, Trimble saw the IRA’s gunfire at the institution, which resulted in the death of colleague lecturer Edgar Graham. Subsequently, he abandoned his academic pursuits for a career in politics. He was also elected as the representative for Upper Bann in a 1990 by-election.

Brandon Lewis, who resigned as Northern Ireland secretary of the United Kingdom in July, wrote about David Trimble’s demise on Twitter. “David Trimble’s passing is very tragic news. His reputation as the architect of the Good Friday Agreement will endure forever. He was a bright politician and devoted public servant. The citizens of the United Kingdom owe him an enormous debt of appreciation for what he has done for our Union.”

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also tweeted his sympathy. He tweeted that Trimble is a “giant of British and world politics”

“I am terribly sorry to read that Lord Trimble passed away earlier today. He was a giant of British and world politics and will be remembered for his intelligence, personal courage, and tenacious desire to improve politics.”
