Don Newkirk, American musician best known for his songs De La Soul and 3rd Bass, has died at the age of 56. On November 26, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five hip-hop musician Rahiem announced the death of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. him on his Facebook page:
“My sincerest condolences to the family of my brother Don Newkirk when he is transgender. Don Newkirk was one of the first R&B musicians to sign with Defjam. You can rest in peace.”
Rahiem explained to AllHipHop how he learned of Don Newkirk’s death.
“One of our close friends called to tell me that Don’s daughter had called to tell him.”
Newkirk is best known for his work on De La Soul’s 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising and 3rd Bass, The Cactus Album, where he sang The Gas Face. The musician has also released his solo album, Funk City, under the OBR/Columbia Records branch of Def Jam Records. Sweat You and I Desire, two of his most successful hits, came from the aforementioned album.
Don Newkirk expects his MC career to be more successful than that of a singer.

“Because I was never a singer.” I have always been an MC. But back then, I simply felt I could better convey what I was trying to rescue with song. When asked about his career, he said:
“Perhaps I would have had greater success. If I continue to lead, 3 Feet High and Rising will come out and ‘Gas Face’ will come out. And so I was in that whole camp, mostly in the camp speaking the vernacular but not really the vernacular, because I was singing, not spitting.”
He continued:
“But I’m pleased it went down the way it did because it left a legacy that I now know had an impact I didn’t even realize existed at the time because we no Internet.”
The murdered 56-year-old also released a second album, Between Love and Lust, in 1992, but it was shelved when Def Jam Records sold it to a subsidiary. Don joined the short-term pilot project BROOKZILL! in 2016, along with Prince Paul, Ladybug Mecca and Rodrigo Brando. Before breaking up, they collaborated on the album Throwback To The Future.

Don once again teamed up with Prince Paul to create the soundtrack for the Netflix documentary Who Killed Malcolm X.
