Dunkirk . Ending Explanation
As Dunkirk’s climax unfolds, the male protagonist and his soldiers achieve a remarkable feat of safely returning to a British port, thanks to a civilian ship assisting in their rescue during a harrowing evacuation. With a sense of relief, they found themselves back in familiar territory, ready to continue their journey back to their base by train.
As they stood on the podium, tired but grateful, a touching encounter awaited them. An elderly man standing nearby had forgotten to distribute blankets to returning soldiers. His gesture of compassion is obvious, but he still looks down, seemingly lost in his own thoughts. Among the soldiers, the main character named Tommy, attracted the attention of the old man. Slowly and gently, the old man reached out and gently touched Tommy’s face.
This poignant moment made a deep impression on Tommy and perhaps on the others who witnessed it. It symbolizes the deep gratitude and support that soldiers receive from their compatriots.
Despite the trauma and challenges faced during the stressful evacuation, this simple act of kindness reaffirms the resilience and humanity that endures even in the darkest of times. It serves as a moving reminder of the unbreakable spirit that holds people together in times of crisis and reflects the lasting impact of Dunkirk’s heroic story.
In the film, Alex believes that the old man and the others see them as ordinary deserters, causing him to accept the skepticism directed at them. However, a blind man always stands by the soldiers, assisting them when they need it.
When the movie ended, there was a touching scene where everyone cheered for the safe return of the soldiers. While Alex braced himself for the worst and lived in constant confusion, he was amazed at the happiness and gratitude of everyone when their guardians returned home safely. This new sense of appreciation gives soldiers hope for the future, knowing they now have a chance in the war to come.

The plot of the movie Dunkirk
During the Battle of France in 1940, Allied soldiers found themselves surrounded by German troops and retreated to Dunkirk beach for evacuation. Tommy, a young British soldier, becomes the sole survivor of the German attack.
At the beach, he meets Gibson, who is burying a body, and together they encounter Alex, a soldier of the Highlanders regiment. Amid attacks by Luftwaffe dive bombers, they attempt to board a hospital ship but are forced to leave. They overhear a plan to rescue the troops of the Royal Navy Commander Bolton, but the ship they were sailing on sank, forcing them to return to Dunkirk.
Meanwhile, in England, a civilian sailor named Dawson, with his son Peter and teenage boy George, boarded his boat Moonstone to help with the evacuation, avoiding requisition by the Navy. Along the way, they rescue a soldier hit by artillery fire from a U-boat attack, and despite his panic, they continue their journey to Dunkirk. However, in a scuffle, George was injured and blinded.
In the air, three RAF Spitfires headed to Dunkirk to provide air support for the evacuation, experiencing limitations due to their fuel capacity. Farrier, one of the pilots, assumes command after their leader goes missing. Despite the broken fuel gauge, he continued his mission to protect the evacuating soldiers.
Back in Dunkirk, Tommy, Alex and Gibson seek refuge in a stranded fishing boat while waiting for high tide. Gibson’s true identity is revealed, and he tragically drowns while trying to escape German bullets. Farrier, determined to help despite the difficulty, shoots down enemy planes and assists in the successful evacuation. However, his plane is damaged, and he ends up having to land in enemy territory, choosing to prevent his plane from falling into their hands.
In the end, more than 300,000 people were evacuated from Dunkirk. British Royal Navy Commander Bolton stayed behind to ensure the safe evacuation of French troops. The bullet-shocked soldier, now back in Weymouth, witnessed the aftermath of George’s death and exchanged a meaningful look with Mr. Dawson.
Tommy and Alex return home, where they are greeted with cheers and gifts from the public. The film ends with Tommy delivering Churchill’s speech on Dunkirk, inspiring the nation to continue the war against Germany.
