Elemental, also known as “Forces of Nature” in some countries, is a romantic comedy computer-animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures. The film is directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Denise Ream, with a screenplay written by Sohn, John Hoberg, Kat Likkel and Brenda Hsueh. Pete Docter served as an executive producer. The film is Pixar’s 27th film.

Set in a world where the elements of nature are anthropomorphized, the story revolves around Ember Lumen, an element of fire, and Wade Ripple, an element of water. They meet and fall in love after Wade is summoned to fix a plumbing problem at Ember’s father’s convenience store.

Peter Sohn started working on the project after the release of “The Good Dinosaur” in 2015. He introduced the idea to Pixar, exploring the idea of a connection between fire and water. The film is inspired by Sohn’s own experiences growing up as the son of immigrants in 1970s New York City. It celebrates the cultural diversity of the city. Romantic films such as “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” (1967), “Moonstruck” (1987) and “Amélie” (2001) also influenced the story.

For inspiration, the team watched city tours from a perspective on YouTube, researching places like Venice and Amsterdam. Animation tools are used to create visual effects and unique looks of each character, especially Ember and Wade. Production of the film spanned seven years, with work taking place both in the studio and remotely at the filmmakers’ homes.

The original score for Elemental was written and conducted by Thomas Newman, marking his fourth collaboration with Pixar. The film premiered as the closing film at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 27, 2023, and was released in the United States on June 16 in various formats, including including RealD 3D, 4DX and Dolby Cinema. While the animation received much praise, the script was criticized for being too poor.

Elemental ends the explanation

In an enclosed space, Wade finds himself enveloped in intense heat. To prevent the blue flame from extinguishing, he made the last sacrifice and evaporated. This heartbreaking event left Ember deeply devastated as he witnessed the passing of his beloved. At first, Ember believed that she would never get the chance to see Wade again.

In the midst of Ember’s deep grief, however, a remarkable phenomenon occurred. The sight of Ember’s grieving state caused an environmental response. Tears began to flow down from the ceiling, adding poetic beauty to the scene. These tears symbolize the connection between Ember and Wade, representing their steadfast love and hope that they can be reunited.

The tears falling from the ceiling are testament to the emotional strength of Ember’s love for Wade. They point out that their relationship transcends physical limitations and that their relationship persists even in the face of adversity. This poignant moment evokes a sense of hope and suggests that there may be a way for Ember to reunite with Wade, despite the apparent impossibility caused by his evaporation.

The detailed description of the scene conveys the depth of Ember’s grief and the profound impact of Wade’s sacrifice. It highlights the characters’ emotional journeys and themes of love, loss, and resilience of the human spirit. This visually striking moment demonstrates the film’s ability to evoke strong emotions through animation and storytelling, leaving an indelible impression on audiences.

What happens at the end of Elemental?

As the heat rises in the enclosed space, Wade, the water element, faces a difficult choice. In order for the blue flame of their love to continue to burn, Wade made a selfless decision. He sacrifices himself and undergoes evaporation.

The act of evaporation means that Wade goes from a liquid state to a gaseous state, rising into the air as invisible water vapor. This transformation is a natural phenomenon in which thermal energy causes water molecules to have enough kinetic energy to escape the liquid form and rise into the atmosphere.

Wade’s decision to vaporize represents his unwavering dedication to keeping the flame alive and keeping the bond alive. By becoming water vapor, Wade merges with the surrounding air, essentially becoming part of the atmosphere. In doing so, he ensured that the blue flame remained, as the gaseous form of water further contributed to the brilliant flame.

Wade’s detailed depiction of evaporation allows the audience to witness the profound impact of his decision. It illustrates the film’s exploration of the intricacies of love and the sacrifices that may be required to preserve it. Wade’s transformation into steam adds an extra layer of metaphorical depth, symbolizing the ethereal nature of their relationship and the invisible yet powerful force that binds them together.

Wade returns after evaporating

The death of a key character in Elemental has raised concerns about the film’s suitability for children. However, the film’s ending goes in a different direction to ensure it doesn’t end on a gloomy note. Wade, who had previously evaporated, is revived by Ember through a touching realization.

She discovered that the moisture left over from Wade’s evaporation was still capable of producing tears. The film highlights how easily the water elements cry, emphasizing their emotional nature. In a twist of fate, Ember’s mourning caused a tear to form from Wade’s remaining moisture.

Once Ember understood the significance of this revelation, she began recreating the scenarios Wade used in The Crying Game to try to bring her to tears. This includes reminiscing about butterflies, an elderly person on a hospital bed, and passionately expressing her love for Wade.

This emotional moment extends beyond Ember, as her parents step in and add their heartfelt contributions. Ember’s mother affirms their compatibility as a couple, calling them a perfect match, while her father lifts Wade’s ban from The Fireplace. The tears shed in this powerful display of emotion will pool in a bucket on the floor, providing enough water to bring Wade back to life.

The rewritten version highlights the transformative power of emotions and their profound impact on how the story is addressed. It shows how expressions of true love, along with collective tears, restored Wade to life.

The scene emphasizes themes of emotional connection and the strength found in shared experiences. Ultimately, the film’s ending ensures a more uplifting ending, allowing audiences, including children, to find solace in the triumph of love and resilience of the characters.

Elemental Conspiracy

Bernie and Cinder Lumen, both of the fire element, face discrimination and struggle for acceptance after immigrating to Element City. Despite the challenges, they founded a convenience store called Fireplace, which became a gathering place for fire elemental patrons. Bernie plans to leave the shop to their daughter, Ember, but she must first learn to control her temper.

When Bernie left Ember to run the store alone, she was overwhelmed by customers and lost control, accidentally causing flooding by bursting a water line. This led to the emergence of Wade Ripple, a water element health inspector. Though reluctant, Wade is obligated to report the violation to his air elementalist, Gale Cumulus, who threatens to shut down the Fireplace. Ember tries to catch up with Wade but arrives too late.

Touched by Ember’s plight, Wade takes her to Cyclone Stadium to beg Gale for leniency. During their conversation, Wade mentions investigating recurring floods, and Gale gives them a chance to prove themselves by finding the source of the problem.

If they succeed in sealing the leak, violations will be forgiven. While searching the canals, Wade suspects that Ember’s short temper has something to do with a hidden truth she’s not ready to accept, but she denies it. Eventually, they discovered a hole in the dam causing the flood and managed to seal it with sandbags. Meanwhile, Bernie deals with water leaks throughout the Fireplace.

As Wade and Ember spend more time together, they develop a deeper relationship and learn about each other’s backgrounds. Wade reveals that the sandbags fail to hold, prompting Ember to use his unique ability to create a stronger seal for the dam. In the meantime, Cinder becomes suspicious of Ember’s activities and decides to spy on her.

Ember visits the Wade family in a luxury apartment and impresses them with her glassmaking skills. She also engages in a heartfelt conversation with Wade in which he admits his feelings for her, making her cry. Gale approves Ember’s glass seal, saving the Fireplace from shutting down. However, Ember realized that she no longer wanted to take over the store.

Bernie announced his retirement and plans to pass the Fireplace to Ember. He shares a story from his past, revealing his own difficulties and prejudices. Wade takes Ember to Garden Central Station, fulfilling her childhood wish to see Vivisteria flowers. Unexpectedly, the station floods and Ember’s safety is ensured by an air bubble created by Gale.

Wade guides Ember underwater through the station. During their journey, they discover that they can touch each other unharmed and share a romantic dance. However, Ember reminds herself of her duty to the store and her family’s prejudice against the water elements, ultimately deciding to leave Wade, much to his heartbreak.

As Ember prepares to take over the Fireplace, Wade turns around and confesses his love to her, inadvertently revealing that she is responsible for the broken pipes. Ember declines Wade’s offer, but Cinder senses his sincerity.

Frustrated, Bernie decides not to retire and refuses Ember’s ownership of the store. Tragically, the new dam burst, flooding the fire area. Ember and Wade find themselves trapped in a room inside the Fireplace, and the intense heat causes Wade to vaporize.

After the floods recede, Ember sadly admits to Bernie that she doesn’t want to run the store and expresses her love for Wade. Ember discovers that Wade’s essence has seeped into the stone ceiling and uses the crying game to lure him back to his original form. Ember reciprocates Wade’s affection and they exchange a sincere kiss.

Months later, Ember and Wade, now a couple, depart from Element City so that Ember can pursue his passion for glassmaking in a remote location. As Ember boarded the train, she bowed to Bernie, who responded to the gesture with tears in her eyes, symbolizing their healing relationship and mutual understanding.
