Bill Musselman, Eric’s father, is also a basketball coach. In fact, he and his father were the first father-son coaching pair in NBA history. Bill was one of five children of Clifford Musselman and Bertha Combs. Despite his father’s lack of sports experience, Bill began playing basketball, football and baseball at an early age. When his mother married James Miller, he moved in with her. Although he was a stepfather, James raised Bill as his own son and was the one who helped him advance his sports career.

Bill attended Wooster High School, where he graduated in 1958 as the school’s all-time leading scorer. He went on to play college basketball at Wittenberg College. He began his coaching career in the 1960s as the head coach at Kent State University High School. Musselman later coached in various leagues, including the NBA, CBA, NCAA and ABA. Bill died on October 30, 1999 in Rochester, Minnesota from a stroke. At the time, he was an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers. Bill also has two other children with his wife, Kris.
