The Fox and the Hound (1981)

The Fox and the Hound is a 1981 American animated film produced by Walt Disney Productions, based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Daniel P. Mannix. The story revolves around the unlikely friendship between Tod, a red fox, and Copper, a hunting dog. Despite the social pressures and natural instincts that make them enemies, they struggle to maintain their relationship. When Copper’s mentor, Chief, is injured while chasing Tod, Copper seeks revenge.

However, in the end, they reconciled and saved each other from danger. The film was directed by Ted Berman, Richard Rich and Art Stevens, and it marked the directorial debut of Berman and Rich. The voice cast includes Mickey Rooney as Tod and Kurt Russell as Copper, with other notable actors joining the cast. Music composed by Buddy Baker.

Walt Disney Productions purchased the film rights to the novel in 1967 but did not begin active development until 1977. The film saw the transition from Disney’s Nine Old Men animators to a new generation of animators, including future directors such as Tim Burton, Brad Bird, and John Lasseter.

After a delay due to the departure of several animators, the film was released on July 10, 1981. It performed well at the box office and received critical acclaim for its animation and voice acting, although some critics deemed it lacking in groundbreaking elements. The film won one award and was nominated for three. In addition, it was the most expensive animated film produced at the time, with a budget of 12 million dollars. A direct-to-DVD sequel called The Fox and the Hound 2 was released on December 12, 2006.

Fox and The Hound . Ending Explained

At the end of The Fox and the Hound, Amos lowers his gun and leaves with Copper. Tod and Copper share a last moment of friendship before parting. Back home, widow Tweed takes care of Amos, helping him recover while the two dogs rest. Copper smiled as he recalled the first day he met Tod before going to bed.

As for why Tod’s mother left him in the woods at the beginning of the movie, in the opening sequence, she is on the run from a hunter and a hound. To protect Tod from danger, she leaves him on a farm and quickly bids him goodbye before fleeing, only to be shot shortly afterwards.

As for Disney’s saddest moment, many consider the heartbreaking scene in “Dumbo” when the protagonist visits her mother as one of the most emotional. In the film, Dumbo, a circus elephant with oversized ears, faces ridicule from both other animals and humans, and the scene highlights the relationship between Dumbo and his mother, who is locked in a cage for trying to protect her son.

In the movie, widow Tweed makes the difficult decision to drop Tod into a nearby game reserve (a forest) to ensure his safety and allow him to live where he truly belongs. This choice comes after Amos threatens Tweed, realizing that she cannot protect Tod from danger forever.

Fox and Hound Conspiracy

After a little red fox named Tod is orphaned, he is adopted by a kind farmer named Widow Tweed, with the help of Big Mama owl, Dinky sparrow, and Boomer woodpecker. At the same time, a hound named Copper is brought home by the hunter Amos Slade, and he becomes Tod’s best friend. Despite warnings from their animal friends, Tod and Copper believe their friendship will last forever.

As they grew, Copper became an adept hunting dog, and Tod visited him at night. One night, their game accidentally awakens Chief, Amos’s old hunting dog. A chase ensued, resulting in Chief falling into the river and being injured. Amos and Copper blame Tod and vow revenge. Feeling no longer safe for Tod, Widow Tweed leaves him at a game reserve. There, Tod meets Vixey, a female fox, who helps him adjust to his new life.

Amos and Copper infiltrate the sanctuary to hunt Tod and Vixey. The situation escalated when they accidentally provoked a dangerous bear. During the fight with the bear, Copper was almost killed, but Tod saved him. In the end they both fell into a waterfall. As Copper approaches the wounded Tod, Amos is ready to shoot him for revenge. However, Copper stood before Tod, protecting him. Understanding that Tod had saved their lives, Amos lowered his rifle and left with Copper.

Tod and Copper share a last moment of friendship before parting. Returning home, widow Tweed takes care of Amos, helping him recover. Copper remembers the day he first met Tod and smiles. Meanwhile, Tod and Vixey watch from the top of the hill, content with their new lives.
