Gene Kelly Award
The Gene Kelly Award for Outstanding High School Musical Theater, established in 1991, is an annual award presented by the City of Pittsburgh Opera of Lights and the University of Pittsburgh. Named in honor of acclaimed actor and director Gene Kelly, these awards recognize outstanding achievement in high school musicals in the Pittsburgh area.
The Best Musical category is divided into three tiers based on budget considerations. In addition, the organization offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have contributed to the production process in a variety of capacities. Currently, there are 29 participating schools, as of 2011.
In 2009, the Gene Kelly Award created the National High School Musical Theater Award, affectionately known as “The Jimmys,” which the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera House co-produced with Nederlander Presentations. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Awards were canceled in 2020. In 2021, only individual prizes will be awarded.
