On Tuesday, January 17, the El Paso Police Department announced the death of Sheriff Greg Allen, who served in the department for nearly four decades. Allen, El Paso’s first African-American sheriff, died at the age of 71, and his departure was mourned by the entire city, including the mayor. While the cause of death has not been released, El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser said that Allen is in the hospital recovering from an (undisclosed) medical treatment. Allen was appointed El Paso’s first African-American sheriff in March 2008, three decades after joining the El Paso Police Department and patrolling Central and West.

Allen, who joined the department in 1978, rose through the ranks as patrol officer, trainer, sergeant and lieutenant before being appointed sheriff in 2008. According to media sources, El Paso was designated the “Safest Big City” in the United States for four consecutive years during his presidency. El Paso announced the death of the Chief and stated:

El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles, who considers Allen a close friend, expressed his condolences and said:
