Barbie Movie Review
Barbie, brought to us by Mattel, the creator of the iconic doll, seems to be attempting the reverse: creating a Barbie who can be everything while still being limited to conforming to traditional female stereotypes. The question arises: should we seek women in our dolls or reduce women to dolls? It seems that feminism should have moved beyond this point by now.
Nevertheless, the brilliant Greta Gerwig’s film, co-written with her partner Noah Baumbach, strives to reimagine Barbie for a time where questioning holds more significance than waiting for solutions and where choices are no longer confined to binary options: stilettos or Birkenstocks, a Ken or the freedom to be oneself, adherence to patriarchy or a revolution against gender norms.
The film’s most impactful moments occur when Robbie’s Barbie ventures outside of Barbie Land into the “real world.” To her dismay, she discovers that she is developing cellulite on her thighs, and her once-arched feet are now flat, no longer resembling the heels she wears.
The realization has brought thoughts of mortality and a feeling of downhill progression. In this new reality, Robbie’s Barbie must investigate what is troubling the owner of her doll version. Through some sort of “space continuum,” the issues are affecting her as well. Gosling’s Ken accompanies her on this journey, and she quickly understands that contrary to what they were taught in Barbie Land, creating dolls in the likeness of powerful individuals who govern the world does not lead to actual change in the real world.
Barbie Movie
The 2023 release of Barbie, an American fantasy comedy film, marks a significant shift from the previous computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television movies based on the well-known Mattel Barbie fashion dolls. This live-action adaptation, which is directed by Greta Gerwig and for which she co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach, follows the main characters Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) as they set out on a transforming trip brought on by an existential crisis. America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell are among the film’s impressive supporting players.
In September 2009, Universal Pictures originally introduced the concept of a live-action Barbie movie, with Laurence Mark on board as producer. The development process, however, started in earnest when Sony Pictures bought the movie rights.
In terms of authors, directors, and casting, there were numerous changes made throughout the course of the project. Finally, in October 2018, Warner Bros. Pictures received the rights. In 2019, Margot Robbie was chosen for the lead role. In 2021, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach were revealed as the film’s directors and co-writers. Early in 2022, the cast’s final members were made public.
From March to July 2022, scenes were filmed at the Venice Beach Skatepark in Los Angeles and at the Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, England. Barbie had her world premiere on July 9, 2023, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Warner Bros. Pictures officially released Barbie in theaters on July 21, 2023, all over the United States.
