Popular rapper Hurricane G died on November 6 at age 52. Rapper Erick Sermon announced the news on Instagram with a photo of the storm captioned (in part):
“Today, my heart has hardened. One of my dearest friends…. my eldest daughter’s mother passed away today #HURRICANEGLORIA was also a Hip-hop icon in her own right. One of the first female rappers from Puerto Rico “She raps beside me.”
The reason for the storm’s death is unclear. Puerto Rican singer known for her collaborations with artists like Redman, Puff Daddy and others.
Storm G emerged with her first album, All Woman.
Storm G is a Brooklyn-born rapper. She is of Puerto Rican descent and approaches her music in a multilingual way, with most of her songs written in both English and Spanish. When giving Spanish lyrics, she raps in a Newyorican accent, a popular Puerto Rican type of Spanish. It’s hard for Spanish speakers to recognize her as a Puerto Rican New Yorker. The rapper, whose real name is Gloria Rodriguez, was the first female member of Def Squad. Erick Sermon, Keith Murray and Redman are other members of the East Coast hip-hop group.
Storm considers the hip-hop trio EPMD to be a major influence on her work. She, like them, adopted a straightforward and direct style of rapping that didn’t overwhelm listeners with skill. She signed with Capitol Records in 1994, but due to the downsizing of the record label, she did not achieve the fame she expected.
Hurricane G didn’t have a record contract until 1997 when she rejoined New York-based HOLA Recordings. Her debut album, All Woman, was published under the name HOLA, but it was not well received. In 2013, she collaborated with Thirstin Howl III in Mami & Papi.

Although the rapper is not very famous, she is famous for having a relationship with Def Squad. She also has a number of followers who were saddened to hear of her passing and took to Twitter to express her condolences.
