Is the Red Dead Revolver Canon?

“Red Dead Revolver” is not considered typical in the Red Dead Redemption series. It exists in a timeline and universe separate from the Redemption games. Although “Red Dead Revolver” was the first game released in the series, it was developed by Capcom and Angel Studios (later renamed Rockstar San Diego) and published by Rockstar Games in 2004.

The Redemption series, on the other hand, begins with “Red Dead Redemption” developed and published by Rockstar San Diego in 2010. This game introduces the player to the character John Marston and continues with “Red Dead Redemption 2”, released in 2018, which explores the backstory of Dutch van der Linde and the Van der Linde gang.

The main reason “Red Dead Revolver” is not considered typical in the Redemption series is the significant difference in timeline and lack of direct connection between the two game sets. “Red Dead Revolver” is set in the 1880s, while the Redemption games take place in the early 20th century, specifically the 1890s and 1900s. The characters and events in “Red Dead Revolver” are not directly related to the story of the Redemption game.

While “Red Dead Revolver” laid the groundwork for certain game elements, such as Dead Eye’s targeting system, the Redemption series expanded and refined these mechanics, creating a more cohesive and immersive experience.

As such, the Redemption series is considered a separate and distinct sequel to the Red Dead franchise, and “Red Dead Revolver” remains a standalone entry in the series’ history.

Red Dead Revolver

Red Dead Revolver, an action-adventure game developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games, debuted in 2004. The game served as the opening entry in the Red Dead series and was originally released for PlayStation 2 and Xbox in May 2004.

The game’s plot is set in the 1880s, depicting the American frontier, where the player follows the journey of a bounty hunter named Red Harlow. Seeking to avenge the deaths of his parents, Red embarks on a fascinating quest throughout the single-player campaign.

In addition to the single player mode, the game also offers local multiplayer, allowing up to four players to participate in free battles against each other or AI-controlled bots.

Development of Red Dead Revolver began in 2000 with the title “Gun Total”. Initially, the project received funding from Capcom while being made by Rockstar San Diego (formerly known as Angel Studios). However, during development, Rockstar Games acquired Angel Studios and took over the project.

Following the departure of Yoshiki Okamoto from Capcom in 2003, development on Red Dead Revolver encountered uncertainty and was temporarily shelved. However, Rockstar Games eventually acquired the rights to the game later that year and revived its development.

Upon release, the game received mixed reviews from critics and enjoyed moderate commercial success. However, the Red Dead series continued to grow with the release of the critically acclaimed sequel, Red Dead Redemption, in May 2010. This was followed by another critically acclaimed sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, which hit shelves in October 2018.

Red Dead Revolver game

Red Dead Revolver offers an immersive third-person shooter and action-adventure gaming experience with a linear storyline. When the player completes the game, they have access to a variety of weapons, including shotguns, rifles, shotguns, hunting knives, molotov cocktails, and dynamite. After completing each level, players can buy new weapons to upgrade their arsenal. Each level ends with a boss battle, and defeating these bosses rewards the player with collectable rewards.

Throughout the game, players can earn ratings based on their performance, which will unlock additional content such as new weapons and characters for the multiplayer mode. These ratings depend on how well the player completes specific objectives, such as the time it takes to complete a level or the accuracy of the weapon.

Although Red Dead Revolver does not feature an open world environment, players are free to explore the small town of Brimstone between levels, where they can interact with non-playable characters (NPCs). The main character is the bounty hunter Red Harlow, but at certain levels the player has the opportunity to control other unique characters, each with their own signature weapon. For example, Red uses his revolver, Jack Swift uses two pistols, and Shadow Wolf relies on a bow.

One notable game mechanic introduced in Red Dead Revolver, and later carried over to other Red Dead games, is the “Dead Eye”. This targeting system slows down time, allowing the player to make precise shots at enemies. After aiming, the player’s character will automatically shoot at the marked locations, dealing significant damage. Dead Eye is also used in duels, which consist of four stages: grabbing the weapon, drawing it, locking the opponent in, and finally firing quickly.

The game also includes a local multiplayer mode, supporting one or two players with the option to add AI-controlled bots. In this multiplayer component, players can participate in free-for-all battles with the goal of being the last man standing. The multiplayer mode uses most of the maps and character models from the single-player campaign, with some exclusive additions.

Red Dead Revolver Conspiracy

In the late 1860s, two explorers, Nate Harlow and Griff, discovered gold in an area known as Bear Mountain and celebrated by building identical revolvers for themselves. However, when Griff was captured by the Mexican Army, he made a deal with the corrupt army general, Javier Diego, offering to reveal the location of the gold in exchange for his life. Diego then orders an American mercenary named Colonel Daren to kill Nate and his family to hide the whereabouts of the gold.

Tragically, Nate and his Native American wife, Falling Star, are murdered, but their son Red escapes after wounding Daren. Twelve years have passed quickly, and Red has become a relentless bounty hunter. He takes down a gang of outlaws led by Bloody Tom and heads to the town of Widows Patch to collect the bounty. However, he is ambushed by Ugly Chris and his gang, who are in control of the town. With the help of Sheriff O’Grady, Red eliminates the gang but takes O’Grady to Brimstone for medical treatment, stopping a train robbery along the way.

At Brimstone, Red meets Sheriff Bartlett, who offers him various bounties against the dangerous outlaws terrorizing the area. In the pursuit of the bounty, Red befriends British trickster Jack Swift, and together they take down many enemies. Red eventually learns of the gold his parents were killed and seeks information from local rancher Annie Stoakes, who has a connection to the gold and refuses to sell his possessions to Governor Griffon.

As Red eliminates his targets, he uncovers more about the conspiracy surrounding his parents’ murder. Intent on revenge, he pursues Colonel Daren, but is captured and forced into a gold mining slave. With the help of his Native American cousin, Shadow Wolf, Red escapes and goes on a mission to kill Diego and Griffon.

In a climactic showdown, Red faces Governor Griffon in a quick draw contest, uncovering Griffon’s true identity as his father’s treacherous partner. After defeating Griffon, Red avenges his family and decides that gold was never his real motive.

Throughout his journey, Red forms valuable alliances with Annie, Jack, and Bartlett, eventually leaving with a sense of justice and closure, while choosing to keep his father’s revolver as a reminder of his past.
