In 2013, James Ennis started playing basketball. He began his professional basketball career after being picked by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2013 NBA draft. On the same draft night, he was transferred to the Miami Heat. James joined the Heat and joined the NBA Summer League in 2013. Due to salary cap regulations, the Heat were unable to contact him to play for their NBA Development League affiliated club, Sioux Falls Skyforce. He decided to play abroad to support his family. On 10 August 2013, he joined the Perth Wildcats and scored 25 points in his first game, earning him the Player of the Year award. He moved to Puerto Rico and joined the Piratas de Quebradillas, where he played 12 games before joining the NBA.

On October 29, 2014, he made his debut for the Miami Heat in a win over the Washington Wizards.
