Career
He came to North America after being picked by the Predators and played his first professional season with Hampton Roads Admiral of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). With a 36-17-4 record in his first season, he was named ECHL’s Rookie of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year, as well as being selected to the all-round Rookie of the Year and First Star team. Much of the next three seasons were spent with Nashville’s best minor league club, the American Hockey League’s Milwaukee Admirals. He won 53-49-12 with Milwaukee and played minimally with the Predators. However, he was unable to secure a regular starting spot for the Predators, playing only six games and losing 0-4 for the club.
Laák chose to return to Europe after being unable to stay with the Predators, spending the 2003-04 season with SKA St. Petersburg in the Russian Premier League. The following year, he moved to the Czech Republic to play with HC Pardubice in the Czech Extraliga, where he would stay for the next five seasons. He enjoyed much success with Pardubice, scoring 116-85-5 and leading them to the 2004-05 championship. Laák played the 2009–10 season with Atlant Mytishchi of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) after a successful season in the Czech Extraliga. When the team was eliminated in the first round of the knockout round, he made an 11-6-4 record. He also spent part of the season on loan with HC Koice in Slovak Extraliga, where he appeared in 17 games.
For the 2010–11 season, Laák signed a one-year contract with Jokerit of the Finnish SM-liiga. In the regular season, he had a 14-11 record with a save rate of 0.923, but Jokerit lost the quarterfinal series to HIFK despite his efforts, including a save rate of 0.940 and 1.94 goals on average.
Laák returned to KHL in 2011, signing with Amur Khabarovsk. Laák has long been a member of the Slovakian national team. He has represented Slovakia in nine IIHF World Championships, two Olympic Winter Games and one Hockey World Cup. He helped Slovakia achieve its first and only gold medal at the 2002 IIHF World Championships in Sweden, as well as a silver medal at the 2000 IIHF World Championship and a bronze medal at the World Championships.
