ALABAMA has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. Yesterday, founding member Jeff Cook lost his battle with Parkinson’s disease. His playing of guitar and guitar has been a big part of the soundtrack of my life, and my heart is heavy for the ALABAMA family!! pic.twitter.com/3qNKypaYJ7

In 2017, Jeff Cook was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Jeff Cook died Monday of complications from Parkinson’s disease. In 2017, he was diagnosed with the condition, and his bandmates Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry knew about it. Cook stopped traveling in April 2017 when the illness began to degrade his health. He told his followers in a statement that the condition affected his coordination and balance and produced tremors.

According to the statement:

“This makes trying to play guitar, violin, or sing extremely frustrating for me.” I’ve tried not to burden people with my complicated health condition because I don’t want the music or the party to stop, and that’s not going to change no matter what.”

He continued:

“I don’t give up, but sometimes our bodies tell us what we need to do, and my body tells me it’s time to rest and recover.”

Randy Owen leaned across the table and grabbed the water bottle Cook was having trouble opening, yanking the cap off and returning it to him when he finished reading the statement to USA Today journalists. Owen added that it was painful because people believed Cook was drunk when in fact he wasn’t. Cook realized something was wrong when he couldn’t throw the bait correctly. Followed by some difficulty playing some notes on the guitar. Randy and Teddy are worried Cook is having a stroke, and Cook’s doctor says he may have Parkinson’s disease. He was then tested and the results verified his suspicions.
