Jesus Revolution Plot

In 1968, Chuck Smith, a stern and respected Southern California pastor, faces the challenge of connecting with the younger generation of hippies who seem disinterested in traditional church teachings. However, his perspective starts to shift when his daughter, Janette, gives a ride to a hitchhiker named Lonnie Frisbee, a colorful and free-spirited hippie on a mission to share the ministry of Jesus.

Initially suspicious of Lonnie, Chuck gradually warms up to him and opens his home to other hippies. Lonnie introduces Chuck to a band called Love Song, and their heartfelt performance in Chuck’s living room cements their bond. Together, they embark on a mission to evangelize the hippie community and others who have been searching for meaning in their lives.

At the same time, a high-school student named Greg Laurie rebels against his Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps class and is drawn into the world of hippies by a girl named Cathe. However, Greg soon realizes the dangers of the hippie lifestyle, especially when Cathe’s sister falls sick due to a drug overdose. Their friendship is strained, and they part ways.

Amidst the chaos of the hippie campus, Cathe listens to Lonnie’s preaching, and Greg finds her there. They reconcile, and Cathe invites him to a church she has discovered, led by Chuck and Lonnie. Despite Cathe’s parents being apprehensive about Greg, they both find comfort and a sense of purpose in the ministry.

As Chuck and Lonnie’s ministry gained popularity, it becomes known as the Jesus Revolution or “Jesus freaks,” catching the attention of the media and even featuring on the cover of Time magazine in 1971. The movement grows rapidly, and Lonnie becomes a key figure alongside Chuck. However, disagreements arise, leading Lonnie to leave for Florida.

Meanwhile, Chuck and Lonnie are remembered as founders of the influential Calvary Chapel movement and, more broadly, as leaders in the Jesus movement.

The film portrays the transformational journey of Chuck, Lonnie, Greg, and Cathe as they bridge generational gaps and discover the power of faith, love, and community to bring about a spiritual awakening that changes countless lives during the Jesus’s revolution era.
