On Friday, November 25, 2022, Jonathan “Hovain” Hylton, one of hip-hop’s most beloved execs, passed away. His death was announced the next day in a post on his Instagram account, saying he died at home. It also asks followers to respect his family’s privacy during this challenging time. Full notes are as follows:
“It is with great sadness that we inform all family, friends and colleagues that Jonathan “Hovain” Hylton passed away on Friday, November 25, while at home.” He was a loyal and devoted Brooklynite father, husband, son, brother and Brooklynite.”
It continued:
“We want to thank all of his close friends for all of your love and support during this difficult time.” We ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and respect their privacy at this difficult time.”
Hovian is a label artist, owner and manager noted for his hard work and kind attitude. T-Pain, YFN Lucci, Cam’ron, Troy Ave and Styles P. Dom Kennedy are among the Platinum-selling musicians he has collaborated with.
Hovian taught “The Music Business” at Kingsborough Community College.
Born in Brooklyn, Hovain’s early exposure to music encouraged him to pursue a career in the field. He commented in a 2017 interview with Scoop B Radio Podcast:
“I don’t know what it is, but I know it has to do with music.” You don’t go to college and say, ‘OK. ‘I want to work in the music industry.’ “I believe my life and upbringing have equipped me for that.”
Hovain, who has a pragmatic nature, first started this business following the late boxing promoter Butch Lewis. He says the event taught him the value of being “independent”. He soon joined the Famous Company with Randall “Sicakamore” Medford. The group has overseen the careers of various performers, including Rich Hill, son of Tommy Hilfiger. They also supported the establishment of a famous Factory live performance, which included musicians such as Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa, in partnership with XXL Magazine.

He quickly founded his own business, Hovain Hylton Management, where he combined management and marketing to create a “unique branding arrangement.” Young Lito, a rapper in Brooklyn, and experienced writer and artist Rob Markman are among his most recent clients. His acumen has earned him partnerships with sports companies like Adidas, Avion Tequila, and Diddy’s Sean John clothing line. When discussing his work ethic, Hovian says it’s not about arranging any deals, but finding the right arrangement that benefits both the client and the brand. He declared:
“The benefits of doing business excellence are far greater than getting a check.” It’s about giving my customers, my brand, and most importantly, a good customer experience.”
Billboard called him a “top music executive” just a week before his death. Additionally, the hip-hop manager was asked to teach a weekly course called “The Business of Music” at Kingsborough Community College last year. The training covers issues like publishing arrangements, how artists can profit from business deals, etc.
