Kalani David, a figure skating prodigy, is believed to have died on Saturday after having a seizure while surfing off the coast of Costa Rica. He is 24 years old. Inertia, a surfing news website, first reported the death of the Hawaiian surfer. According to the website, the skateboarding champion has Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a heart condition. Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome can cause tachycardia, which means his heart sometimes beats fast. The disease affects between 0.1 and 0.3% of the world’s population and is thought to be non-lethal for the majority of people. John Hopkins asserts:
“The biggest danger is sudden death from a heart attack, which tachycardia can cause.” However, this is very unusual, occurring in less than half of the cases.”
In 2016, Kalani David suffered a seizure related to Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
Kalani David had his first seizure due to the disease while skating in California in August 2016. In an Instagram post about the event, Kalani said:
“I had a seizure, fell on my face and woke up in the ambulance with my heart stopped.” When I got to the hospital, I had three seizures. “I am so grateful to be alive.”
Later that year, at Christmas, he had another seizure. The late Hawaiian star had a convulsion that lasted for more than six hours, leaving him in a coma for two days. When the event happened, the surfer was at home on Oahu. Then in an interview with a surf magazine, he said:
“They don’t know for sure, but they think it’s because I have Wolf Parkinson-White Syndrome, which interrupts the electrical current flowing through my heart. It gives your heart an extra muscle, and that makes your heart rate go up too fast, so I had to have surgery to remove that muscle.”
In 2017, he had surgery to remove excess muscle from his heart, which was causing the seizures.
Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is characterized by an “additional signaling channel between the upper and lower chambers of the heart that produces a rapid pulse.” This disease is a somewhat rare heart disease that manifests itself at birth. WPW syndrome is not usually fatal, but it can lead to many other heart problems. Children and young adults can die from sudden cardiac arrest caused by this disease. Treatment of this disease includes a variety of techniques such as medications, cardioversion, and arrhythmias.

Meanwhile, photographer Patrick Eichstaedt posted a photo of himself with Kalani David and explained how the two met when Kalani was just 6 years old. He extended his condolences and support to the skater’s family. Kalani’s family is trying to get his remains out of Costa Rica so he can be properly buried in Florida, USA.
