Keith Levene started his music career as a streetwalker.

Keith Levene was an important figure in the punk and post-punk music scene in the 1980s. As a young man, he began his musical career as a frontrunner for the progressive rock band Yes. He formed the rock band Clash with Mick Jones in 1976, but quit before their debut album was completed. However, he co-wrote the song What’s My Name on their 1977 album.

After the Sex Pistols dissolved in 1978, Levene founded Public Image Ltd. with lead singer John Lydon, drummer Jim Walker and bassist Jah Wobble. PiL elevated the punk scene with a mix of reggae and dub, featured on their 1979 album Metal Box. Levene worked on the band’s first and third albums, Public Image: First Issue and Flowers of Romance, respectively.

In an interview with the Anger news site in 2001, Levene said:

“What happened to me was that after I mastered the rules, I didn’t want to be like any other guitarist.” I was not trying to stand out. I simply have a keen sense of what went wrong. So if I do anything wrong, like make a mistake or do something out of focus, I’m open to hearing back.”

In 2012, he reunited with bandmate PiL Wobble to release the song Yin & Yang. According to The Guardian, Keith wrote a book during his time at PiL with British novelist Adam Hammond.
