Leonie Forbes, a famous actress, presenter and producer, passed away on October 25 at the age of 85. In a tweet, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said that Forbes’ name, along with the theater and Jamaican television, associated with Jamaica. According to the tweet,
“She was always a refined, polite woman with a voice that demanded respect and admiration.” We express our gratitude to Leonie for her contributions to Jamaican art and culture, as well as our sincere regrets at her passing.”
Leonie has appeared in several local films as well as TV series such as Z-Cars, The Odd Man, The Public Eye, and others.
Leonie Forbes has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Excellence for her distinguished career and contributions.
Forbes was born on June 14, 1937 in Kingston, Jamaica. She attended Kingston High School, Excelsior College and Durham College of Commerce. After her studies, she worked as a typewriter at the University of the West Indies. She later worked for writer Barry Reckord, typing his works. In 1959, she began working as a broadcaster for the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation and received a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in the UK.
Forbes spent six years at RADA researching radio, television, and theater methods. She has also worked as a writer for BBC Caribbean and has starred in shows such as Z-Cars, The Odd Man, Public Eye, and Hugh and I. In 1962, she made her film debut. on stage as a protagonist in Lloyd Reckord’s Busha Bluebeard. . Leonie returned to Jamaica in 1966 and continued to work with JBC. She remained in Australia from 1968 to 1970 because her wife was working at the University of Queensland at the time. She has also performed in a few radio plays for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and taught singing part-time.
In 1972, she was appointed head of JBC’s FM radio station, Radio Two, and in 1976 she was appointed radio director. Leonie has subsequently appeared in a number of local plays and films, as well as international productions such as Milk and Honey, Orchid House and Soul Survivor. In 1980, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Distinction. Leonie: Her Autobiography, Forbes’ autobiography, was published in August 2012. At the time, she told The Sunday Gleaner that she enjoys helping people smile and forget their problems, and it was a series of lucky coincidences that led her to her job. She continued,
“It’s a bit different. For starters, we are now compensated. Back then we did it purely out of love and interest.”
Leonie says that things have changed because there are more venues, performances are longer, and now individuals can travel and showcase their talents.
