Biography of Mahmoud Darwish
Darwish was born on 13 March 1941 in the Palestinian village of al-Birwa. He grew up during a time of great political upheaval, when Palestine was conquered by Israel after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. The Darwish family was forced to evacuate their home and became a refugee, and he spent most of his youth in refugee camps in Lebanon and Syria.

Darwish was educated in a refugee camp in Lebanon before attending American University in Beirut. He started writing poetry at a young age, and his first book, “Asafir bila ajniha” (The Wingless Birds), was released in 1964.
