Marvel Snap Overview

Marvel Snap is a digital collectible card game developed by Second Dinner and published by Nuverse, available for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows platforms. The game immerses players in the vast Marvel Universe, featuring a diverse collection of iconic characters. It was officially released on October 18, 2022, after a period of beta testing.

In Marvel Snap, each player builds a deck of 12 cards. These cards represent Marvel characters and possess attributes such as costs, power levels, and special abilities. Before each round, the player simultaneously selects and places one or more cards face down in one of three randomly assigned positions. Each position has its own unique effect. When the round ends, the cards will be revealed, triggering any special abilities. The player with the highest power at a particular location will claim that location. The goal is to win two out of three places, and typically, a game consists of six rounds. As the game progresses, the player gains increasing “energy” to play stronger cards.

Progression in the game’s rating scale is achieved by earning “blocks”. Initially, each game starts with a single block bet, but the player can choose to double the bet through a mechanism called “snapping”. When a snap occurs, the opponent has the option to either withdraw or accept the snap, resulting in a higher stake. Designer Kent-Erik Hagman compared this mechanic to the mirrored cube used in the traditional board game Backgammon.

Marvel Snap offers simple gameplay mechanics that make learning and playing relatively simple compared to other collectible card games. Individual games typically last only a few minutes, allowing matches to be quick and engaging.

At the time of its global release, Marvel Snap had a roster of over 170 characters, and that number continues to grow every week. Players can expect a wealth of options when it comes to building their deck, with a growing selection of beloved Marvel characters to choose from.

Marvel Snap’s June 8 Update Patch Notes

Marvel Snap players have been engaged in heated debates about the game’s balance since its release. Often, there is a particular deck or deck archetype that dominates the metagame so much that the only solution is to make adjustments through nerfs.

Unfortunately, in the past, Marvel Snap patches were released only every four weeks. This means long waits for players, especially for those trying to climb the ranking ladder and reach infinite status.

However, there is good news on the horizon. Monday night, the developer of Marvel Snap, announced that weekly balance patches will be introduced to the game. These regular updates will be sent over-the-air (OTA), allowing for immediate card adjustments. These changes will be rolled out as hot fixes, as opposed to more comprehensive patch notes that will still be released every four weeks.

This move to weekly balance patches demonstrates our commitment to continuously improving the game’s balance and resolving any issues that arise. Players can now expect more frequent updates in an effort to maintain a fair and enjoyable gaming experience.

Update OTA card balance in 2023

Happy Spider-Versus season! We have 5 updates for you this week, including an update for the beginner card. Jump right in!

CHANGE CARDS

Spiderman

  • [Old] 4/3 – On Reveal: Your opponent cannot play cards in this position for the next turn.
  • [New] 5/4 – On Reveal: Your opponent cannot play cards in this position for the next turn.

Spider-Man works very well in many decks such as the High Evolution Key and Galactus. We wanted to avoid these playstyles being too strong because they were annoying to play against, so we decided to tweak Spider-Man to limit his play in combos like Spider-Man vs. Professor X. While this puts him in the same Expense position as Professor X, his locked-in colleague, we think their effects are distinct enough that they can both sit at 5 Cost.

Beast

  • [Old] 2/2 – On Reveal: Return your other cards in this position to your hand. They cost less than 1.
  • [New] 3/4 – On Reveal: Return your other cards in this position to your hand. They cost less than 1.

Return decks with cards like Kitty Pryde, Bast, and Hit-Monkey have been doing really well lately. Beast especially stands out to us as a very powerful supporting element in the deck. We want the Monster’s effect to require more investment to be profitable, so we’re adjusting him to a 3 Gold card. This also gives Falcon more space to spread his wings, as he often feels like a worse Beast without the cost reduction effect.

Hood

  • [Old] 1/2-2 – On Reveal: Add a Demon to your hand.
  • [New] 1/-3 – On Reveal: Add a Demon to your hand.

Many decks can take advantage of the cheap Demon 6-Power while negating The Hood’s negative Power. We’re doing a small nerf to The Hood’s Power to make him more difficult to play if you can’t counter his Base Power. Notably, this is actually a summoner spell for Viper decks that hand The Hood over to the opponent to handle.

Fake

  • [Old] 3/1 – On Reveal: Steals an Ongoing ability from a random enemy card at this location.
  • [New] 3/2 – On Reveal: Steals an Ongoing ability from a random enemy card at this location.

Similar to our Enchantress buff, Rogue is a card we expect to see more of against strong On-going effects. While it’s not surprising that Enchantress is more popular thanks to its higher Base Strength, wider coverage, and synergy with cards like Zabu and Lizard, we were surprised to see Rogue perform poorly even in the Silver Surfer deck. We’re giving her a little boost of Strength to make her a more viable tool against the Ongoing cards.

medusa

  • [Old] 2/2 – Visibility On: If this is the middle position, +2 Strength.
  • [New] 2/2 – Display On: If this is the middle position, +3 Strength.

Players move through many starter cards fairly quickly, but most of them return in a series of archetypes later. For example, Quicksilver has been in the Lockjaw deck for a while, Iron Man seen playing in Thanos In progress, and Mr. Negative, and recently, High Evolutionary brought all the vanilla cards back. However, Medusa stands out as a card that is barely used anywhere but in the early stages of SNAP. Although she’s always 2/4 at the moment, her limitations make her weaker than she looks. We’re buffing her up to help her better compete with the other picks at 2 Gold.

Thanks for reading! We are continuing to closely monitor the balance of the game and in particular High Evolutionary. See you all next week for the new patch and Conquest release!
