In college, he started playing football. He and his brother Tim played for Boston University from 1994 to 1997. After graduating from college, the Packers placed him in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft.
He was a backup quarterback for the team in 1999 and 2000. Same as Mike Holmgren and the Seattle Seahawks on March 2, 2001. He was traded for first- and third-round picks.
In Seattle, he played against Trent Dilfer. After a strong 2002, he started 2003 with certainty. He started all 16 games, helping Seattle reach the Wild Card for the first time since 1988.
