Nancy started skating as a child. She became famous at the national level after placing fourth in the junior division at the 1987 United States Figure Skating Championships. The following season, she made her senior debut. Her national climb continued when she finished third at the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She qualified for the 1991 World Figure Skating Championships, where she won a medal copper.
She won a bronze medal at the Olympics in 1992. The next year, she won the 1993 US national championship. She was also an Olympic silver medalist in 1994 and a two-time world medalist. Kerrigan was attacked with a police baton in 1994 by an attacker hired by Tonya Harding’s ex-husband. This event was dubbed “The Whack Heard Round the World”.
