Nik Turner is an accomplished saxophonist and flute player.

Nik Turner’s family moved to the Kent seaside town of Margate when he was 13, and he worked at the local fair during the summer months. He completed his engineering program and served a year in the Merchant Navy. He met guitarist Dave Brock in 1967 while doing some mundane work around Europe. Details about his family members are still unclear. However, before his family moved in, his father apparently worked at an arms factory in Oxford. In the early 1960s, Nik Turner studied the clarinet and saxophone for two years and met a number of jazz performers in Berlin who taught him the value of expression over technical skill. Turner also has a car and volunteers to serve as a passerby to Hawkwind. This happened shortly after the formation of the band.

When the group discovered he could play the saxophone, they invited him to join them. He contributed to some of their songs. However, not everyone in the band was delighted with his approach to music, as he is said to have a preference for playing over other members of the band. Turner has appeared on live albums such as Zones, This Is Hawkwind, Do Not Panic and others. In 1976, he left the band.

Nik Turner returned to England and formed the band Sphynx with Alan Powell, Mike Howlett, Tim Blake and Harry Williamson in 1978, releasing the album Xitintoday. He appeared as a guest in Williamson’s Fairy Tales and Gilli Smyth’s Public Mother. Along with Mo Vicarage, Ermanno Ghisio Erba, Trev Thoms and Dead Fred, he formed another group called the Inner City Unit. The band recorded albums such as Pass Out and Maximum Effect before disbanding.

Nik Turner’s Fantastic All Stars is his next attempt, a fusion of jazz and rhythm and blues driven by a Hammond saxophone and organ. They played for several years before releasing an album called Kubanno Kickasso! In 1993, he was asked by Pressurehed and Helios Creed to record a version of his Sphynx project with original flute-based tunes. The album Sphynx was released the same year. They continued to tour the United States and released another album, Prophecy of Time, in 1994.
