RADWIMPS
Radwimps, stylized as RADWIMPS, is a prominent Japanese rock band that embarked on its musical journey independently in 2003 before signing with Toshiba EMI in 2005.
The name “Radwimps” is a unique amalgamation of two English slang terms, namely “rad” and “wimp.” According to the band, this coined word carries multiple meanings, including “excellent weakling” and “superlative coward,” reflecting their distinctive approach to music and self-expression.
The band’s breakthrough moment arrived in 2006 with the release of their album “Radwimps 4: Okazu no Gohan,” which catapulted them into commercial success.
However, Radwimps is perhaps best known for their later singles “Order Made” in 2008 and “Dada” in 2011, both of which achieved the prestigious number one position on Oricon’s single charts in Japan. These chart-toppers solidified their status as a major force in the Japanese music scene.

RADWIMPS History
Radwimps, a Japanese rock band, originated in 2001 during the members’ first year of high school in Kanagawa, Japan. The group’s initial lineup comprised five friends who had known each other since middle school. Lead vocalist Yojiro Noda’s early exposure to music, particularly Oasis, sparked his interest in the field.
The band’s activities initially revolved around Yokohama, where they debuted with their first performance on BB Street in Kannai district in February 2002. Guitarist Akira Kuwahara left high school to focus on the band’s growth. Radwimps gained recognition by participating in the Yokohama High School Music Festival in 2002, winning the grand prize with their song “Moshi mo.”
Their debut single, “Moshi mo,” was released in 2003, followed by their first album, “Radwimps,” featuring songs they had composed during middle school. After a hiatus, Radwimps returned in 2004 with new members. They released singles like “Kiseki” and embarked on a Japan-wide tour. In 2005, their second album, “Radwimps 2: Hatten Tojō,” was released. Signing with Toshiba EMI, their major debut marked a new phase.
Their album “Radwimps 3: Mujintō ni Motte Ikiwasureta Ichimai” established their popularity in 2006. 2006 saw the release of “Radwimps 4: Okazu no Gohan,” reaching number five on Oricon charts and earning Gold certification. In 2008, their single “Order Made” hit number one. Their album “Altocolony no Teiri” debuted at number two in 2009. Radwimps achieved their second number-one single with “Dada” in 2011.
Their sixth album, “Zettai Zetsumei,” was certified Platinum. In 2016, they gained global recognition with the soundtrack album “Your Name.” They released the album “Human Bloom” in 2017 and “Anti Anti Generation” in 2018. They contributed to the film “Weathering with You” in 2019 and launched a world tour. Despite challenges, Radwimps continued creating music, contributing to films like “The Last Ten Years” and “Suzume” in 2022. Their journey has been marked by success, collaborations, and a dynamic evolution in musical style.
