Ray Shulman Passed Away At The Age Of 73

Ray Shulman, guitarist and co-founder of legendary progressive rock band Gentle Giant, has died aged 73. He passed away on March 30, after a long illness, in London. Derek Shulman, Ray’s brother and bandmate, verified the news on Facebook.

Derek stated:

“It is with great sadness that I announce that Ray Shulman, my brother and best friend, passed away on March 30 at his home in London.” I was with him until the very end as he battled a protracted illness. At least, I know he’s very comfortable right now.

Fans and music enthusiasts around the globe were shocked to learn of Ray Shulman’s passing. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Tanner, his brother, Philip, and his bandmate, Derek Shubhman.

After Gentle Giant dissolved in 1980, Ray Shulman pursued a career in composing.

Ray Shulman began his work in the mid-1960s starring in Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. Shulman provided vocals as well as bass guitar and orchestral play. Shulman and his companions, his siblings Derek and Phil, created Gentle Giant after Simon Dupree and Big Sound dissolved in 1969.

Gentle Giant, the band’s second record, was released in 1970, and they quickly established themselves as one of the most artistically bold and innovative bands of their time. Their music incorporates rock, classical, jazz, and folk components, as well as complex time notation, intricate vocal harmonies, and virtuosic instrumental performances.
