Roat, who was born on July 3, 1993, had a few television parts, including Dr. Jerry Chandler in a pilot episode of the NBC sitcom The Doctors in 1962. He featured in around 170 episodes of the sitcom, which ran for 20 seasons from April 1963 to December 1982. He then appeared as a guest on an episode of The Fugitive, an ABC criminal drama series. It debuted in September 1963 and ran for four seasons, ending in August 1967.

Richard co-starred with Eva Gabor, Robert Hays, and Jay Leno in the 1978 telefilm Almost Heaven. He rose to prominence as a result of his appearance on Seinfeld when he played a doctor in an episode from Season 8. He later appeared as a professor’s colleague in an episode of the popular television sitcom Friends.
