Rivals Of Aether Tier List 2023

Making this Rivals of Aether Tier List has been a little tricky (at least, for me). That’s because the small roster of rivals made it easier for the game developers to provide each rival with ample support and updates. Some even players would even say that differences between characters will only matter in tournies and pro plays.

Nonetheless, we’ll be trying our best to come up with a Rivals of Aether Tier List, in the hopes of helping newbies pick a rival that will make them enjoy the game as much as possible.

Our Rivals of Aether Tier List will have four tiers: S, A, B, and C. As you may have already guessed, S-Tier will be made up of characters considered the most powerful in the game. On the other hand, A-Tier will refer to great alternatives that offer a relatively high chance of winning. The B-Tier will give you the Rivals who are okay, average. Finally, C-Tier will be listing the “worst” characters (we’ve intentionally added the quotation marks because, as mentioned, all the rivals are super viable).

S-Tier

  • Forsburn

  • Maypul

  • Ori and Sein

  • Ranno

  • Sylvanos

A-Tier

  • Absa

  • Etalus

  • Clairen

  • Wrastor

  • Zetterburn

B-Tier

  • Kragg

  • Elliana

C-Tier

  • Shovel Knight

  • Orcane

S-Tier

  • Forsburn

Capable of harnessing the power of smoke, Forsburn has many good combos and a lot of utility. The only catch is he has a steep learning curve, making him a hard pick for beginners. Some of Forsburn’s elemental powers include Smoke Screen, Decoy, and Consume/Combust.

  • Maypul

Popular among players all around the globe, Maypul is usually picked because of her great strengths and agile movements. Maypul may not be able to heal herself, but she can definitely kick some ass with her Watcher’s Mark, Wrapped Up, and Sling Shot.

  • Ori and Sein

Coming from Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and Sein work together to defeat their enemy. While Ori uses Bash, Stomp, and Glide to attain victory, Sein works on putting their rivals between a rock and a hard place with Spirit Flame or Charged Flame.

  • Ranno

As the third water-based character in the game, Ranno dominates his foes by launching his Toxic Trap that allows him to combo. He also uses Poison Spin and Poison Stacks that renders his enemies helpless.

  • Sylvanos

Imagine a wolf, but with big leaves for fur and branches for legs, that’s what Sylvanos is. Tagged as the ultimate villain in the world of Aether, he makes his wrath felt through Untamed Growth, Burrow, and Vine Pin.

A-Tier

  • Absa

Representing lighting is Absa. Quick on her feet, she is one of the hardest characters to learn because of her unique playstyle. Still, she’s worth investing time on with her killer Cloud Control, Thunder Bolt, and Condensed Storm.

  • Etalus

Heaviest in the group, Etalus is one tough guy to kill. His ice armor reduces knockback, and his icicles make up for one of the strongest edge-guarding in the game. His elemental powers are Home Ice Advantage, Armored Up, and Avalanche.

  • Clairen

There may be nothing exceptional about Clairen’s attributes, but she can surely deal damage with her sword. To add, her exceptional force field can also make it hard for enemies to approach her. Clairen’s elemental powers are Ionized Tip, Plasma Echo, and Energy Field.

  • Wrastor

As funny looking as he may be, there is nothing laughable about Wrastor’s special moves. For instance, his Forward Special can create a slipstream that amps his overall speed. His elemental powers — Winged Flight, Wind Current, and Aerial Ace — are also handy, especially when he needs to escape.

  • Zetterburn

If you are after cool-looking characters, then Zetterburn is the perfect one for you. A buff lion with flames for a mane, Zetterburn will set the world on fire with his Burn Damage, Wild Fire, and Fire Amp.

B-Tier

  • Kragg

As the Earth’s Bastion, Kragg is skillful in using unique blocks to confuse and eventually combo opponents. Known for his big build and strong edge-guarding, Kragg uses Rock Hurl, Defense Ball, and Earth Pillar to defeat his enemies.

  • Elliana

People usually don’t associate the element heat or steam with snakes, but that has to change with Elliana. With complicated projectiles for her missiles and rockets, Elliana can easily disrupt her foes. Her elemental powers are Overheat, Letting Off Steam, and Abandon Ship.

C-Tier

  • Shovel Knight

A guest character from a game of the same name, Shovel Knight, can adapt to different matchups and playstyles. All you have to do is visit the shop and get some upgrades. Shovel Knight’s elemental powers are Treasure Hunter, Relics and Armor, and Shovel Drop.

  • Orcane

Orcane is cute, yes, but he is just as dangerous as he’s adorable. He is also capable of dealing long and intricate combos through his quick attacks and puddle stage control. His elemental powers are Puddle Teleportation, Bubble Evaporation, and Water Amp.

Rivals Of Aether Guide

Rivals of Aether Workshop: A Comprehensive Beginner’s Guide

Unlock the secrets of Rivals of Aether Workshop with this complete starter guide! Dive into the technical aspects of creating a Workshop character, discover essential tools and resources, and overcome common obstacles that new creators may encounter.

What You’ll Need

Pixel art expertise is essential, especially when crafting animations from scratch. While coding skills are advantageous, they’re not mandatory, as most character elements can be created without extensive coding knowledge. It’s also beneficial to familiarize yourself with Rivals of Aether gameplay, as understanding the mechanics will help you design a well-balanced character. Take some time to explore the in-game tutorial before diving into modding.

Downloading a Template Character

Begin your character creation by selecting a suitable template. Recommended options include Sandbert, the official template character, the Blank Character Template for a fresh start, or Sandbert With A Phone, which offers improved code and balanced stats after you’ve grasped the basics.

Ensure you have the necessary folders and files set up by subscribing to a workshop character. Locate the ‘subscribed items’ and ‘local’ folders, and transfer the chosen template(s) to your ‘local’ Rivals of Aether workshop folder.

Setting up GMEdit

GMEdit is the ideal code editor for Workshop characters, providing auto-completion for Rivals-specific names, functions, and values. Download the *BETA* version of GMEdit and add the RoA Dialect for seamless integration. Restart GMEdit and import your character’s config.ini file to access all the character files.

Editing Your Character’s Name and Base Stats

Open the ‘config.ini’ file in your character folder to define crucial details like your character’s name, description, author, and item type. Adjust the base stats in the ‘scripts/init.gml’ file, keeping in mind the character’s ‘hitstun_grav’ and ‘air_friction,’ which significantly impact weight and survivability. Fine-tune the movement in Training Mode until it aligns with your vision.

Editing Your Character’s Attacks

Explore the ‘scripts/attacks’ folder to define your character’s attack stats and properties using Grid Indexes. These indexes control frame data, hitboxes, sound effects, and more. While initially challenging, studying templates and other characters will aid your understanding of how attacks are set up.

Sprites

Prepare your character’s sprites, saving them as transparent .PNG files. Organize UI sprites and portraits in the root folder and place all other sprites in the ‘sprites’ folder. Export your sprites at 200% size to ensure proper scaling in the game. Use ‘sprite_change_offset()’ in ‘load.gml’ to adjust the sprite’s origin point and avoid floating or clipping issues.

Assigning Sound Effects

All sounds and music should be placed in the ‘sounds’ folder as ‘.ogg’ files. Utilize the ‘sound_get()’ and ‘sound_play()’ functions to assign custom sounds to Grid Indexes or play sounds manually. Consider using Rivals of Aether’s default SFX List alongside your custom sound effects.

Advanced Scripting

For intricate attacks and character behavior, delve into character scripts written in GML (Game Maker Language). ‘update.gml’ and ‘attack_update.gml’ control passive effects, custom behavior, and attack specifics. Familiarize yourself with character variables and functions to tailor your character’s actions.

Uploading Your Character

Before uploading your character, ensure the config.ini file is accurate, removing the ‘url’ tag for new characters or keeping it for updates. Navigate to Rivals of Aether’s Steam Workshop, locate your character, and upload it. Backup your work to avoid losing progress.

Final Tips

Backup your work frequently using external drives, cloud storage, or version control systems like Github. Reloading your character in Training Mode is as simple as pressing F5. Use Ctrl+8 to access the debug log for troubleshooting. Test your character alongside the base Rivals cast regularly to maintain a consistent experience. Consider uploading a brand-new item to receive maximum exposure on the Steam Workshop front page.

Rivals Of Aether Tier List Plot

In the enchanting realm of Aether, a vibrant tapestry of anthropomorphic animal races thrives, each group affiliated with one of four warring civilizations, each holding sway over a distinct element: fire, water, earth, or air.

Amidst this realm’s vibrant tapestry, the Water Trade Company’s trade routes find themselves under relentless assault from the relentless Air Armada. Seeking an end to the strife, the Company forges an alliance with the noble thief Orcane. In return for retrieving their stolen goods from the clutches of the Armada, the Company promises better living conditions for the denizens of Merchant Port.

In the Fire Capital, tragedy strikes when the Emperor is found murdered, casting suspicion upon his son, Forsburn. Desperately pleading his innocence to his brother Zetterburn, Forsburn claims he was framed by the Fire Council and the newly-crowned Emperor Loxodont. However, Zetterburn remains unconvinced and launches an attack. Forced to flee to the neighboring wastelands, Forsburn finds solace with the Smoke Clan.

Loxodont’s coronation witnesses the theft of the ceremonial flame by a figure bearing a striking resemblance to Orcane. A furious Zetterburn pursues the culprit, venturing forth in a relentless rage that engulfs Merchant Port. Though Zetterburn emerges victorious in battle, the imposter is unveiled as nothing more than a shadow projection.

With determination in his heart, Zetterburn embarks on a pursuit back to the shadow’s source. Meanwhile, the real Orcane, fresh from his own mission, decides to trail the enigmatic figure.

Thus, Maypul and Forsburn form an unlikely alliance, uniting to unveil the truth behind the enigmatic shadows haunting Aether’s lands.

As the tale unfolds, we journey to the skies, where two intrepid wingmen, Wrastor and Bradshaw, embark on a scouting mission for the Air Armada. Their quest takes a perilous turn when they stumble upon a colossal breach within the Rock Wall that encircles the Aetherian Forest.

In their investigative efforts, they encounter Kragg, a vigilant Wallbuilder sworn to safeguard the Rock Wall’s integrity. Misunderstandings lead to a grievous injury inflicted upon Bradshaw, prompting Wrastor’s vow for vengeance.

On another front, Kragg faces an unexpected encounter with a figure resembling Maypul. Blinded by suspicion, Kragg initially believes the Wallbuilders betrayed their trust. Unbeknownst to him, the real Maypul is hot on his trail, shadowing his every move.

Fate weaves its intricate tapestry, guiding these disparate warriors toward a shared destination—the heart of Aether’s mystery. Drawn together at a crater nestled within the realm’s core, they confront an awe-inspiring stone structure emerging from the depths.

Unbeknownst to them, the abyss below harbors a malevolent force, unleashing more shadow creatures upon the world. Realizing the true source of the imposters and the forest’s ailing condition, the warriors set aside their differences, uniting to combat this dire threat.

In a breathtaking display of valor and unity, the six warriors battle as one, prevailing against the shadow creatures that emerged from the depths. As the dust settles, reconciliation replaces rivalry, and a newfound understanding blossoms amongst them. Resolute in their determination, they pledge to stand united should the shadow creatures ever return, safeguarding the realm of Aether with their unyielding spirit.

Rivals Of Aether Tier List Gameplay

Rivals of Aether stands as a spirited successor to the renowned fan-made remake, Super Smash Land, deeply rooted in the mechanics of its predecessor, Super Smash Bros.[6] In this thrilling two-dimensional arena, each character embarks on a quest to knock their opponents out, engaging in intense combat with fighting game-style moves at their disposal.

Beyond the traditional repertoire of attacks, these formidable contenders harness elemental-based powers and passive abilities that intricately influence the very stage they battle upon.[7] Thus, a captivating meta game unfolds, intertwining offensive prowess with the manipulation of the arena itself.

A striking feature of Rivals of Aether is its distinctive character alignment with classical elements, shaping their unique play styles. From the fervent flames, we encounter Zetterburn, Forsburn, Clairen, and Mollo; embodying the waters, Orcane, Etalus, Ranno, and Hodan grace the stage; soaring through the air with grace, we find Wrastor, Absa, Elliana, and Pomme; steadfast in the earth’s embrace, Kragg, Maypul, Sylvanos, and Olympia stand tall. Notable guest appearances include Ori and Sein from Ori and the Blind Forest, alongside the renowned hero of the Shovel Knight series.

Diverging from the mechanics of Smash Bros., where many characters focus on close-combat attacks with short-lived projectiles, Rivals of Aether brings a delightful twist. Every character possesses at least one move with a lasting impact on the stage itself.

Be it captivating bubbles ensnaring enemies, ice granting swift movement, or a water puddle empowering attacks or serving as a teleportation point, they all craft their mark on the battlefield. Some even conjure platforms, artfully altering the physical makeup of the stage. Cecilia D’Anastasio of Kotaku eloquently portrayed Rivals of Aether’s move sets as more “uninhibited” compared to the more “reserved” approach of Smash Bros.[10]

Over time, the game has expanded its roster and offerings, introducing crossover skins for Maypul and Ranno inspired by Brawlhalla characters, Ragnir, and Wu Shang, respectively, on January 17, 2018. The Definitive Edition release ushered in additional skins, transforming the fighters into diverse characters.

The creative minds behind the game have also gifted players with two characters through the Steam Workshop: the enchanting panda Guadua, and the delightful April Fool’s Day jest, Sandbert.

An exciting announcement on April 1, 2021, elevated fan excitement, revealing that four beloved fan-made characters from the Steam Workshop would officially join the game via a free update in late 2021. The thrilling addition includes Mollo, Hodan, Pomme, and Olympia.[11] The long-awaited update with these captivating characters was joyously unveiled on February 3, 2022, further enriching the enchanting world of Rivals of Aether.

With each new addition, Rivals of Aether continues to soar, weaving a captivating tapestry of elemental battles and relentless camaraderie, earning its rightful place as a beloved masterpiece within the gaming realm.
