Samara Joy McLendon, jazz singer from the Bronx of New York City, was named Best New Artist at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. She was nominated in the category alongside Anitta, Omar, and Anitta. Apollo, DOMi & JD Beck, Muni Long, Latto, Maneskin, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle and Wet Leg. Olivia Rodrigo, a winner of the same title, presented the award to the artist.
During his acceptance speech at the 2023 Grammy Awards, the artist expressed his surprise and deep appreciation for winning the award.
She stated:
“I’ve been following you on TV for a long time… Thank you so much for this distinction, and thank you to everyone who listened and supported me… I am so grateful to be here. for who I am… here just by being myself, by being who I was born to be.

All about Samara Joy McLendon
Samara Joy McLendon was born and raised in the Bronx area of New York City. She was born on November 11, 1999 and grew up in a musical family. Elder Goldwire and her grandparents, Ruth McLendon, are members of the Philadelphia-based gospel group The Savettes. She told NPR that her blood relatives are also musically inclined.
She stated:
“My father was a bass musician, so there was a lot of funk, soul and R&B genres. But he is also someone who grew up mostly in church and played in church.
McLendon chose music for further study after being inspired by her musical history, which led to her enrollment in the State University of New York’s jazz studies department. Jon Faddis, an instructor and trumpet player, tutored her there. Samara rose to fame in high school while attending Fordham High School of the Arts. She played with the school’s jazz band and won the Fordham University “Essentially Ellington” competition in New York City.
Following the success, the singer received the 2019 International Jazz Vocalist Award Samara McLendon. In 2021, she graduated with honors and released Samara Joy, her debut studio album, featuring Matt Pierson, who later became her manager. During this time, she also posted several performances on TikTok that went viral and had over a million views. She won a Grammy for her second album, Linger Awhile, which was published in 2022.
