After playing in junior cricket for Baulkham Hills Cricket Club, he progressed to play grade cricket for Parramatta District. Abbott completed his schooling at Gilroy College, Castle Hill. He is an all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm fast-medium.

Abbott made his first-class debut for New South Wales in 2011-12 and his List A debut in 2013-14. He quickly established himself as a regular member of the team and was a consistent contributor.
