The Marvels Post-credits Scene Explained, How Many Post Credit Scenes in The Marvels?

“The Marvels” post-credits scene reveals Monica Rambeau in an alternate reality with her believed-dead mother Maria, dressed as Binary, hinting at the MCU’s integration of X-Men, in line with Kevin Feige’s plans and previous clues in the franchise.

The Marvels

“The Marvels” is a superhero movie released in 2023, based on characters from Marvel Comics. It’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and serves as a sequel to the 2019 film “Captain Marvel.” The movie is directed by Nia DaCosta, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik.

The main characters in the film are Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson), also known as Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau (played by Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (played by Iman Vellani), also known as Ms. Marvel. The story revolves around these superheroes, who start swapping places whenever they use their powers, leading them to team up.

The movie explores their adventures and the challenges they face as they join forces. The cast also includes Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson.

The filming took place at various locations, including Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, Longcross Studios in Surrey, England, Los Angeles, and Tropea, Italy. The title “The Marvels” refers to the three main characters and their similar abilities.

The film premiered in Las Vegas on November 7, 2023, and was released in the United States on November 10, 2023, as part of Phase Five of the MCU. However, despite its highly anticipated release, “The Marvels” received mixed reviews from critics.

The Marvels Post-credits Scene Explained

In the end of “The Marvels,” Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris, is seen closing a dangerous wormhole. This wormhole, opened by Dar-Benn, posed a threat to the fabric of space and time, causing a rift in the space-time continuum. Monica, using powers charged by her teammates, closes the wormhole from the inside but gets stuck in a different dimension.

The post-credits scene reveals where Monica ended up. She wakes up in a sterile laboratory bed and sees her believed-to-be-dead mother, Maria Rambeau, portrayed by Lashana Lynch. In a touching moment, Monica realizes she is in a different reality. This scene connects with an earlier moment in “Wandavision” where Monica returns from the Blip, only to find out her mother passed away from cancer.

During their conversation, a character known as Beast, a popular figure from the X-Men, explains the situation to Monica. Notably, Maria Rambeau in this alternate reality is wearing a red-and-white superhero costume, resembling the character Binary from Earth-616 in Marvel comics. Binary is a variant of Carol Danvers.

For those not deeply familiar with Marvel, it might be a bit challenging to identify this version of Maria Rambeau. The costume suggests ties to Binary, and it hints at the introduction of X-Men characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel, has previously mentioned the inclusion of X-Men in the MCU, and this post-credits scene is another clue, following hints in “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness” with Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier and the revelation that Kamala Khan is a mutant. Beast’s appearance in this scene adds to the growing anticipation of the X-Men’s role in the future of the MCU.

How Many Post Credit Scenes in The Marvels?

“The Marvels” has one post-credits scene. Usually, Marvel movies have two, but this time there’s only one.

In this scene, Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris, successfully prevents two realities from merging by stitching a hole in the space-time continuum. However, she ends up getting stuck in the other reality. In the post-credits scene, we find Monica lying in a bed, connected to monitors. To her surprise, her mother, Maria Rambeau, portrayed by Lashana Lynch, is sitting next to her. This is puzzling because Maria is supposed to be dead (as shown in “WandaVision”), and she appears much younger than when she died.

An off-screen voice, revealed to be Dr. Hank McCoy, also known as The Beast from X-Men, speaks to Monica. This version of The Beast, played by Kelsey Grammer, confirms that Monica is in the Fox X-Men reality, now a part of the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This is the first explicit confirmation of the X-Men’s existence in the MCU.

As Monica pleads with her mother to remember her, Maria stands up, and the camera reveals her wearing a red-and-white costume. Marvel fans will recognize this as the Binary costume, a character from X-Men comics in the early 1980s. Before becoming Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers was Binary, a super-powered intergalactic heroine. In this universe, it seems Maria has taken on the role of Binary and is unaware of her connection to Monica.

This post-credits scene not only hints at the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU but also adds a layer of mystery with Maria’s transformation into Binary and her lack of recognition of Monica.

The Marvels Plot

The story begins with trouble among the Kree, a spacefaring species, as their home planet Hala faces a civil war after the Supreme Intelligence’s collapse. This conflict leaves Hala barren, losing air, water, and sunlight. Dar-Benn, the new Kree leader, uses a powerful artifact called the Quantum Bands to create a space anomaly, attracting the attention of S.W.O.R.D.

On the S.A.B.E.R. space station, Nick Fury hosts peace talks between the Kree and Skrull empires. Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau are called in to investigate the anomaly. When Rambeau touches it, she, Danvers, and Kamala Khan switch places through teleportation, leading to chaos as they battle each other’s enemies.

Discovering that their light-based powers are linked through quantum entanglement, the trio, informally called “the Marvels,” joins forces. They learn that Dar-Benn’s actions threaten the stability of the jump point transportation network, endangering the universe.

Dar-Benn’s destructive plans involve draining the atmosphere of Tarnax and drawing ocean water from Aladna to Hala. The Marvels fight her, but she steals Kamala’s Quantum Band to open a hole into the multiverse. Kamala and Danvers team up to close the breach, leaving Rambeau stranded on the other side. Danvers sacrifices herself to restore Hala’s sun.

Inspired by their brief alliance, Kamala decides to form a new hero group, starting with Kate Bishop. In a mid-credits scene, Rambeau awakens in a parallel universe, greeted by an alternate version of her mother Maria and the mutant Hank McCoy.
