The plot of the next three days
In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Lara Brennan is sentenced to life in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. Three years later, Lara’s relationship with her son Luke deteriorates, and her husband, John, struggles to maintain their relationship during visits to the prison.
Despite their efforts, Lara’s appeal was unsuccessful and her attorney advised John to accept the damning evidence against her. According to witnesses, Lara was seen leaving the crime scene, where her boss was brutally attacked with a fire extinguisher.
Although Lara insists she ran into the real culprit, her fingerprints were found on the murder weapon and the victim’s blood was found on her coat. With no legal options left, Lara attempts suicide, forcing John to take drastic measures to free her from prison. Seeking guidance, John approached Damon Pennington, a former prisoner who had written a book about his seven successful escapes.
Over the course of the next three months, John meticulously studied the processes and operations inside the Allegheny County Jail. In an attempt to get a fake passport, he gets into trouble when a drug dealer robs and beats him up at a bar. In the end, John managed to secure fake documents from a deaf motorcyclist for the sum of $3,700. He also bought a shotgun for his plan.
During a tense moment when examining a folding key inside the prison, John vomits outside, attracting the attention of the detectives who arrested Lara. Suspicious of his activities, they track him to his home, believing he intends to sell his house and belongings.
John also learns to break into the truck of the medical lab responsible for testing Lara’s diabetes. When John learns that Lara will be transferred to a high-security prison in three days, John finds himself unable to complete the sale of their home in time.
As a result, he was about to rob the bank but ended up backing out, too stressed out. While in dire straits, he almost ran into mother and daughter. An argument during a visit with Lara causes her to confess her guilt in a flash of anger. However, John refuses to believe her. Determined to fund his plan, he tails a local drug dealer to a meth lab, burns the building, and forces criminals to hand over their cash.
A gunfight ensued, resulting in the death of one of the criminals. John drove the injured merchant to the hospital, but unfortunately, he was shot and killed by his own boss. John dumped the body at a bus stop along the way, damaging his taillights in the process. His father discovered his plane ticket, realized John’s intentions and they parted.
As John begins working on his plan, he cuts off the lab’s phone lines and puts the blood-making job in the truck, revealing that Lara is suffering from a condition called hyperkalemia. Meanwhile, John leaves Luke at a birthday party. Lara was then transferred to the hospital when her doctor failed to make it to the lab. Detectives investigate the incident at the meth lab, track down John’s broken taillight and break into his empty house, deducing his plan to rescue Lara.
At the hospital, John disables Lara’s guards and convinces her to escape with him. Faced with the detectives, they tried to blend in with the crowd of Pittsburgh Steelers fans and board the subway. John made an emergency stop, allowing them to evade the police and escape in a nearby getaway car he had prepared. Realizing that there was not much time left to pick up Luke from the zoo, John turned onto the highway, promising to find their son later.
In a moment of despair, Lara was about to open the car door and risk her life on the road, but John saved her in time. They proceed to retrieve Luke from the zoo. Along the way, they offer to carry an elderly couple trapped at a blockaded train station, using them as cover to get past a police checkpoint. John drove the couple to Buffalo, New York, before heading to the Canadian airport.
With their fake passports, John, Lara and Luke board a flight to Venezuela, successfully evading the authorities who are being fooled by the pieces of John’s escape plan that he intentionally left behind.
Back at the crime scene, the investigators return and a key flashback reveals Lara’s innocence. One of the detectives almost found the button that would prove Lara’s alibi. Meanwhile, in a hotel room in Caracas, John photographed his sleeping wife and son, capturing a moment of relief and victory after their arduous journey.
