In 1987, at the age of 18, this cowboy turned pro. He was able to become a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). He was named PRCA’s Rookie of the Year in 1988 after winning $45,977 in three raw stock events: bull riding, bareback, and saddle riding. Murray completed the PRCA round in another year. He and his uncle, Mr. Butch Myers, were the only two cowboys to qualify for one or more competitions. In 1989, he and his uncle held a friendly competition in which his uncle Myers led him with $2,786 to reach the final.
He won $58,031 and beat Myers with $21,202. In 1989, he was the youngest all-round champion. At the age of 23, he became the youngest millionaire in rodeo history.
