Zaitsev was born in Ivanovo on March 2, 1938, to Mikhail Yakovlevich Zaitsev and Maria Ivanovna Zaitseva. His father was a victim of Joseph Stalin’s repression and was imprisoned in one of Stalin’s camps, while his mother worked as a cleaner and a laundromat. He attended high school number 22 Ivanovo from 1945 to 1952.[4] Zaitsev was denied admission to industrial academies, theater schools and pilot schools because his father was considered an enemy of the people by the state.
In 1952, he began his studies at the University of Chemistry and Technology in the Faculty of Applied Arts of Ivanovo, where he became interested in manufacturing and obtained a degree to become a textile craftsman. In 1956, he graduated with honors from university. He arrived in Moscow in 1956, realized that working with textiles was his goal and began studying at the Moscow Textile Institute, where he graduated in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in painting and design.

Career
During the Soviet era, Zaitsev and Valentin Yudashkin dominated clothing, and he is compared to other world-renowned fashion designers such as Christian Lacroix, Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent. Zaitsev is considered to be able to compete with Western designers; but, in the communist system, the only place outside the Soviet Union where Zaitsev could operate was Czechoslovakia. Alexandre Vassiliev, a designer and fashion historian of Russian origin residing in Paris, claims that “if he had the opportunity to show his collections abroad, he would most likely become a world-famous brand.” He began working as the creative director of the experimental technological sewing factory Mosoblsovnarkhoza in March 1962, where he directed the production of women’s clothing for retail establishments in Moscow and the surrounding area.
Zaitsev appeared as a judge on Channel One’s TV show “Fashion Verdict” (Russian: одн pиовор) in 2007 where he gave an assessment of the fashion sense of the participants. Zaitsev revealed that he was attracted to traditional Turkmen clothing after visiting Ashgabat for the Turkmen Textile Show in June 2008 and announcing plans for a new collection featuring traditional Turkmen ingredients. The casual line will be made entirely of Turkmen cotton and will feature the traditional Turkmen embroidery that has captured his interest. Zaitsev has always admired the costume sketches provided by Pablo Picasso and Albert Benois, among others, for Sergei Diaghilev’s Paris troupe, and Zaitsev’s collection for Russia Fashion Week 2009 pays homage to the Russian ballet showman.
Death
Zaitsev died of gastrointestinal bleeding at the Shchyolkovo city hospital on April 30, 2023, at the age of 85. Before that, he suffered from Parkinson’s disease which left him largely paralyzed and reduced his ability to communicate and move.
