Why do some shows not available on Netflix have ads?
Netflix has launched a new subscription tier called “Netflix Basic with Ads”, which is cheaper but with certain limitations. Between 5% and 10% of TV shows and movies available in regular packages are not accessible at this new level due to licensing restrictions. Netflix has discontinued the “Basic” Ad-Free Plan in the US and UK
Netflix has decided to remove the $9.99 ad-free “Basic” plan in the US and UK, leaving only three options for new subscribers: the $6.99 “Standard with Ads” plan, the $15.49 “Standard” plan, and the $19.99 “Premium” plan, both of which are ad-free.
Existing subscribers on the Basic plan can continue to use it, but new or old subscribers will no longer have access to this option. The move is expected to spur new users to switch to an ad-supported or standard plan, which costs more than double the ad-supported option.
According to Netflix executives, the ad tier generated a higher revenue per subscriber than the standard tier. The company remains neutral on which tier users choose, but the removal of the Basic plan is likely to direct new subscribers to standard or ad-supported plans.
The ad tier, which launched as “Basic with Ads” last year, has garnered nearly 5 million monthly active users, as reported during the company’s prepaid advertising rollout. While active users and subscribers are different metrics, this shows a growing interest in the ad-supported product.
Netflix also revealed that engagement on the ad plan is similar to the ad-free plan, indicating that users are spending significant time on the service, which could lead to increased ad revenue.
The decision to scrap the Basic package in the US follows a similar move made in Canada a month earlier. Netflix is scheduled to report earnings after the market close on the same day.
