Wish

“Wish” is a 2023 animated musical fantasy film from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, it marks Veerasunthorn’s feature directorial debut. The screenplay by Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore follows 17-year-old Asha, voiced by Ariana DeBose, who senses an impending darkness in the Kingdom of Rosas.

The story revolves around Asha’s passionate plea to the stars, delving into themes of wishes and Disney’s centennial celebration. The star-studded cast includes Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, Angelique Cabral, Victor Garber, and others. The film combines computer animation with the charm of Disney’s traditional hand-drawn style.

Development began in 2018, publicly disclosed in 2022, with an official announcement in September. “Wish” premiered on November 8, 2023, at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood and theatrically released in the United States on November 22.

The reception has been mixed, with the film grossing $49 million. Inspired by Disney’s centennial, “Wish” explores the theme of wishes coming true and serves as the origin story for the wishing star. Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice composed the songs, with Dave Metzger orchestrating the score.

Wish Plot

In the magical realm of “Wish,” King Magnifico rules the island kingdom of Rosas, using sorcery to fulfill the desires of his subjects, sealing their wishes until he deems fit to grant them. The story centers on Asha, a determined 17-year-old, seeking Magnifico’s apprenticeship to fulfill her grandfather’s wish.

However, she uncovers Magnifico’s deception—he hoards ungranted wishes, denying their return to their owners. Distraught, Asha summons Star, a celestial being, to help retrieve the wishes. As the kingdom senses the magic, Magnifico, corrupted by forbidden power, becomes threatened. Asha, with her friends and the newfound ally Star, challenges Magnifico’s tyranny.

The plot unfolds with betrayals, magic, and the resilience of collective wishes. Asha’s courage inspires the citizens to reshape Rosas’ destiny, overpowering Magnifico. In the end, Amaya takes the throne, fostering a new era where wishes are realized independently, leaving behind a tale of unity, transformation, and the enduring power of dreams in the heartwarming narrative of “Wish.”
