Outchef’d, Food Network’s new food show, premiered an enticing two-part episode on Tuesday, September 28, 2022, at 9 p.m. ET. The episode features two chefs and each side’s opponents competing against each other. The night’s chefs include Iron Chef Alex Guarnaschelli and Chef Antonia Lofaso. Home chefs Jimmy and Derek pitted against legendary chefs. Derek Bowley is a teacher in Washington who has always had a passion for cooking. Participants only need one vote from a panel of six tasters to win and take home $5000, while professional chefs must aim to wipe out all votes.
While Jimmy received one vote and won a cash prize, Derek received no votes in the second half of the show, leaving him empty-handed but with valuable culinary experience compared to Chef Antonia Lofaso.
Outchef will feature more of Derek Bowley’s adventures with chef Antonia Lofaso.
Before the competition, Derek mentioned that his love of cooking arose when he started helping his mother in the kitchen. When he moved out and started cooking, he began to learn more by watching episodes of Food Network, which “helped him try new things”. He confessed in the confessional:
“I like to share what I know because I believe food is amazing…and that shows when I talk about food or my cooking.”

When Outchef’d host Eddie Jackson greeted them, he waited in the green room with his wife Tim and best friend SJ. Derek initially mistook it for an audition and was surprised to learn that he would be competing against Chef Antonia Lofaso. Chef Antonia Lofaso has a background in reality television, having starred in such series as Cutthroat Kitchen, Top Chef, Chopped, and Restaurant Startup, among many others.
Outchef’d contestants and chefs were given eggs as the main ingredient for their meal and 45 minutes to prepare it. Derek tries to boil the potatoes the whole time they cook. He tried transferring it to the pan for better results, but only succeeded when the time limit ran out. While the couple were preparing the final steps of their meal, Outchef’d host Eddie Jackson took to the streets to select tasters on the panel to review the preparation process.

While the panel praised the chef’s menu and overall taste, they said the egg was not the “star of the meal”. Although Derek’s meal was “firm and tender,” the panel found that eggs and potatoes didn’t offer much of a flavor.

Chef Antonia Lofaso received all the votes for the ending of Outchef’d. Derek appreciates his time on the show, even if he doesn’t win the $10,000 prize. Outchef’s chef debut has started off on a hot note and there will be more competition in the future. Other chefs competing against entrants include Eric Adjepong, Anne Burrell, Maneet Chauhan, Scott Conant, Tiffani Faison, Amanda Freitag, Alex Guarnaschelli, Antonia Lofaso, Marc Murphy and Geoffrey Zakarian.
