Lauren Cook, daughter of John Cook, began her volleyball career at Lincoln Pius X. Lauren was a standout player who helped Pius win three consecutive Class B state championships. Lauren, John and Wendy Cook’s eldest child was born in 1991 and is 32 years old this year. Lauren was a first-team all-state selection in each of her final three seasons at Lincoln.

She was also named an All-American by Volleyball Magazine and set a state record with 4,399 assists while playing setter. Lauren attended UCLA after graduating from Lincoln and continued her volleyball career. Lauren may have only played volleyball at UCLA for one year but she made an impression. She won the AVCA National Freshman of the Year award in 2009 after averaging 10.69 assists, 2.44 digs, 0.77 kills and 0.40 blocks per set. She is also the first Bruins player to win this honor. Lauren attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln after leaving UCLA. Lauren had to leave UCLA due to academic concerns. The event planning major was not offered at UCLA and it was added at Nebraska during Lauren’s sophomore year.

Lauren says that LA culture also played a role in her decision to return to her hometown. Lauren, a self-described small-town Nebraska kid, played three years at Nebraska. Lauren played setter at Nebraska with two-time All-American Sydney Anderson. Lauren was selected as co-captain and first-team All-Big Ten during her senior year in 2012. She received numerous honors while at Nebraska and remained with the Huskers. Lauren co-hosts the Kicking Back with the Cooks podcast with her father. The podcast is shared with listeners on the Nebraska Huskers YouTube channel. Lauren married Jason West in 2018 and the couple has a daughter, according to Lauren’s Facebook profile.

Taylor Cook, John Cook’s son, has always stayed out of the public eye. The former athlete is the youngest child of the Nebraska women’s volleyball coach. Taylor’s younger sister was a standout volleyball player at Lincoln Pius, so Taylor was also a soccer player. Taylor received his second shot his senior year at Lincoln in 2012 after missing the 2011-12 school year due to a stress fracture in his lower back. Taylor told the Lincoln Journal Star in 2012 that he quit baseball due to lower back concerns but still intended to join the golf team the following spring.

Taylor also said that during the hiatus, he earned his pilot’s license and traveled to Europe with his father. Previously, in an interview, John confessed that attending Taylor’s events was always difficult due to their busy schedules.
