The Halloween Baking Championship is almost here and 12 bakers are ready to compete for $25,000 and an all-expenses-paid stay to ten American haunted houses at Hotel Henson. The eighth season of the popular Food Network competition series will begin on Monday, September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Lauren Rogers, one of the contenders, wants to win the tournament for her grandmother after experiencing bigotry last year.
In February 2021, Lauren Roger’s Gotti Sweets bakery was uprooted. Her business was damaged the same month, and someone spray-painted an N on a car parked in front of her store. In response, the Halloween cake-making championship candidate said,
“Hate crimes and hostile behavior are terrifying.”
Rogers, like many in her community, was terrified of the police and did not report racist graffiti to them. She speaks,
“You have been advised not to contact the police, or they will come and shoot you.”
Lauren shared a photo of the spray paint on her Instagram, which caught the attention of Police Olympia Vasile Kovzun. He returned the next day and promised to open an investigation into the incident. Officer Vasile and his colleagues also increased foot patrols in the area. The officers were surprised to find that someone in their community didn’t trust them and chose to support Lauren. Rogers praised their efforts, saying,
“I really appreciate that; I did not anticipate any reaction from the city; I don’t believe people are paying that much attention.”
Currently, the police have no lead in the case.

Lauren is from Washington and is known for her custom cakes. She wants to win the contest to make her grandmother proud, with whom she used to bake cakes during the holidays. Every Saturday, she makes one cake every hour, as recommended by the Food Network. During her short stint at Baskin-Robbins, she found her passion for cake design. Lauren then chose to pursue her hobby professionally by enrolling at Le Cordon Bleu Western Culinary Institute in Portland, Oregon.
In 2018, she started her own store, Gotti Sweets, in Olympia, Washington. Lauren is best known for her ‘order-to-order bakery’ and her made-to-order cakes. She has 15 years of experience making cakes, cupcakes, pies and cookies. She also sells pastries by the slice, French macarons, peanut butter and molasses cookies to her customers. Lauren’s bakery is famous for its Pie Tots, which are small cakes wrapped in sponge cake and filled with fruit.
Season 8 of the Halloween Baking Championship
Twelve contenders will compete in the Halloween Baking Championship by creating weird, scary, yet delicious sweets for the judges. John Henson will host the show, which will be judged by Stephanie Boswell, Carla Hall and Zac Young. Henson will be in charge of the spooky hotel where the chefs will be staying for the next eight weeks. After each mission, one or more bakers will be eliminated depending on the quality of their dessert. Each episode will see the bakers take on two missions depending on the theme of the week. Every Monday at 9 p.m. ET, Food Network airs the Halloween Baking Championship.
