Swami Shivapremananda’s Biography
Swami Shivapremananda was born on July 26, 1925 and died in 2019 at the age of 94. He was born and raised in Berhampore, West Bengal, India, into a wealthy family. Suhendu Ranjan Ray is his birth name. Swami Shivapremananda came from an aristocratic family in Berhampor, West Bengal, India. He is of Indian descent and is a Hindu. His father, Sudhendu Ranjan Ray, was a teacher by profession, while his mother, Swarnalata, came from a wealthy silk merchant family.
He was always a good student, and after graduating from high school he planned to work in the government, but fate had a different opinion from him. As a young man, he went to Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, to meet his hero, Swami Sivananda.

Career
Swami Shivapremananda started his career as a devoted disciple of Swami Sivananda. He studied yoga, comparative religions and philosophy with him for about 16 years. He is also Swami Sivananda’s personal secretary. He then began teaching yoga at the Vedanta Forest Yoga Institute in Rishikesh, as well as writing for the monthly publication Divine Life and Wisdom Light.
He is also involved in many humanitarian issues through the Sivananda Eyes Relief camps and visiting temples in the Himalayas and Tibet. He became director of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in Milwaukee and then in New York in 1961.
He later traveled to other countries and built Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers in locations such as Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Santiago. He is the author of several publications, including “Step-by-Step Yoga for Stress Relief”, “Yoga Insights” and “Vaincre Le Stress Par Le Yoga”.
