As Above So Below Ends Explanation

The ending of “As Above, So Below” is an important culmination of the film’s theme and character line. It reveals workarounds in the characters’ journeys and provides a deeper understanding of the film’s exploration of redemption, faith, and the concept of Hell.

Throughout the film, the characters must confront their own sins and the demons within as they navigate the catacombs, which serve as symbolic representations of the nine rings of hell from Dante’s Inferno. The main character, Scarlett, is burdened with guilt for not responding to her father’s pleas for help before he committed suicide and for stealing the philosopher’s stone.

When Scarlett and her companions reach the climax of their journey, only three people remain: Zed, George, and Scarlett herself. Each of them must confront and atone to escape the crypt and find redemption.

Zed’s guilt revolves around his neglect of his son, while George is tormented by guilt over his brother’s accidental death. Scarlett, burdened by her past actions, believes she possesses the philosopher’s stone and rushes back to the crypt to return it. However, she eventually realizes that the power of the stone lies in her belief in herself and the stone, rather than in its physical presence.

With this new understanding, Scarlett is able to save George from death, proving her maturity and redemption. The surviving characters then confess their sins and pass through a manhole, symbolizing their ascent from the bottom of Hell and their reappearance into the world.

This ending parallels Dante’s journey through Hell in “Inferno”, where he must descend through various circles before reappearing on Earth. The mention of going down to escape reflects the idea that a person must face and admit their sins before they can find salvation.

Furthermore, the epilogue emphasizes the film’s exploration of redemption and faith. The characters’ ability to recognize and correct their sins demonstrates their maturity and their willingness to confront their own Hell. By admitting their wrongdoings and seeking forgiveness, they find a path to redemption and a chance to start over.

The film also deals with the theme of the power of faith and belief. Scarlett’s realization that the power of the philosopher’s stone lies in her faith highlights the importance of belief in herself and the ability to find strength and redemption within herself.

Overall, the ending to “As Above, So Below” offers a satisfying resolution to the characters’ arcs, while emphasizing the film’s exploratory themes of redemption, faith, and the journey through Hell. It serves as a thought-provoking ending that makes the audience reflect on one’s power to face one’s sins and find redemption within oneself.

As above So below the plot

Scarlett Marlowe, a young scholar, continues her quest to find her late father’s stone, a legendary alchemy discovered by Nicolas Flamel. This stone possesses the power to turn base metals into precious gold or silver and bestow immortality.

Scarlett discovers the artifact “The Key of the Rose” in a cave that is planned to be demolished. However, when she witnesses a man being hanged, the process of destruction begins, narrowly escaping the destruction of the cave.

She goes to Paris and enlists the help of her ex George and her cameraman Benji. Deciphering the clues from the key, they discovered a puzzle engraved on Flamel’s tombstone, which led them to the coordinates of the Catacombs of Paris.

Scarlett attempted to reach the site through an official tour but found it out of bounds. A stranger informs them that a guide named Papillon can assist them if they find him at a nearby club. Scarlett recruits Papillon, his girlfriend Souxie, and their friend Zed.

Papillon leads the group to a restricted entrance. George was hesitant to enter at first, but when confronted by a policeman, they fled into the cave. Along the way, they encounter a group of female singers, including a woman they met at the club. As they crawled through a narrow tunnel, it collapsed, trapping them and forcing them to move forward.

The party discovers a blocked tunnel, and is warned by Papillon that anyone who ventures through it will disappear. His friend, La Taupe, known as “The Mole,” was among the missing. Despite trying to find an alternative route, they somehow found themselves back in a blocked tunnel and decided to cross.

Inside, they meet La Taupe, who explains that going deeper into the crypt is the only way to escape. In the end, they discovered a tomb containing the well-preserved Knight Templar, a pile of treasure, and the Flintstone. When they get the stone, which activates the trap by trying to get the treasure, the room collapses.

La Taupe seems lost under the rubble. Using the Flamel Stone, Scarlett miraculously healed the wound on Souxie’s arm. They came across a drawing of a door in the ceiling, along with the Gnostic Star of David representing “Above, Below”, indicating a hidden hole in the floor.

Adventuring through it, they found a tunnel with the Greek inscription “Abandon all hope, all who enter here”, reminiscent of the inscription on the entrance to Hell in Dante’s Inferno.

On the other side of the tunnel, they encountered the inverted reflection of the room they had just left, where La Taupe was waiting. He kills Souxie and disappears. Further, the cultist from the club pushes Benji to his death. Papillon is then dragged into a burning car with an image of his deceased brother, who resembles the stranger who guided Scarlett to find Papillon.

The car exploded, burying Papillon on the floor. Scarlett, George and Zed continue their journey, witnessing terrifying spirits and demons appear. The statues on the wall come to life, with one ripping off George’s throat. Scarlett tries to heal her wound using Flint but realizes it’s a fake stone. To save George, she must return it to its place and find the real stone.

Scarlett ran back, only to discover the terrain was now bloody and full of bitten faces. When she returned the stone, she saw her reflection in the mirror and understood that the true power of the Flint lay within her. Meeting George and Zed again, she meets the same hanged man she saw in Iran, claiming him as her father.

Scarlett apologizes for ignoring her father’s phone call just before he killed himself, and he disappears. She then turns back to George, healing him with a kiss. Chased by demons, the three survivors find themselves cornered into a black hole. Scarlett explains that they must jump in and confess their past sins in order to survive.

George confessed to being unable to save his brother from drowning, while Zed admitted refusing to acknowledge his child. They jumped into the hole and miraculously survived, emerging from the right in the streets of Paris through a manhole. Scarlett and George hug while Zed walks away, safe at last. In her closing remarks, Scarlett reflects that her pursuit was never treasure but truth.
