Originally billed as the first episode of the third series, “San Junipero” went through a fascinating evolution during its development. The initial drafts revolved around the concept of nostalgia therapy and were intended to be set in the 1980s. The first script explored the story of a heterosexual couple with an unhappy ending. The true nature of San Junipero is revealed—a simulated reality where the deceased can live and where the elderly can visit, inhabiting their youthful bodies for a chosen period of time.
In the physical world, the older version of Kelly, played by Denise Burse, visits Yorkie, played by Annabel Davis, who is cared for by her nurse, Greg, played by Raymond McAnally. Through Greg, Kelly learns that Yorkie was paralyzed at the age of 21 due to a car accident that occurred when her parents reacted negatively to her coming out as a lesbian.
Yorkie wishes to have assisted suicide to reside permanently in San Junipero, but her family opposes. As a solution, she plans to marry Greg so he can agree on her behalf. However, when Kelly offered to marry Yorkie, she enthusiastically accepted the proposal. Kelly allows Yorkie to be euthanized, allowing her to move to San Junipero permanently.
